Dear Admin and other forum participants, I've had an idea which I think would be a great benefit for us all. My idea is that of a timed debate (say a week long) here on this forum between two individuals on a topic that is relevant to the theology of the Fellowship. We would need to create a thread (perhaps sticky it at the top) and insist that only the two debate participants post there. The admin could function as moderator, closing the thread at the end of the week etc. I would propose, as the first topic of debate, this question: - The Church has a vital function in the application of Salvation.
Other topics I would love to debate would be: - The ministry as understood by the Friends is biblically consistent.
- Church buildings are unnecessary additions to Christian faith and impact on the way in which the faith is practiced.
- The concept of conventions is biblically consistent.
- The Bible is inerrant and infallible.
- The example of the Apostles is true for all time.
I don't know who would be willing to debate these topics with me, but an interested (and knowledgable) exe might message the admin and the debate could be arranged, starting with the presentation of the Friend's position on, say, next Monday (Sunday for those in America - Australia is a day ahead). Debates are never "won" or "lost. The purpose of debates is to have two sides present their arguments for honest people to evaluate. I have always maintained that " truth emerges through the conflict\clash of ideas". I think this would be an invaluable start in having exes and Friends lay out their beliefs, comparing, contrasting and defending and asserting their positions clearly. What say you, Admin \ et al?

git said- I would propose, as the first topic of debate, this question:
shouldn't you wait for the moderator to accept your idea?? You went from asking to do this to just doing it?. ..And you put yourself at the front of the line to debate?? .. what's up with that?
and insist that only the two debate participants post there.
and then we'll have to have another topic to follow right below this one for everyone else that wants to put in their 11 cents worth.
-The Church has a vital function in the application of Salvation.
Since no one else volunteered yet, I select myself. What a mighty feeling..what power.. ..everyone bow..NOW! ..my first response- the "church" has absolutly nothing to do with a persons salvation...should we define some of these terms to insure that we remain on the same soccer field.. .church, application, salvation?. ...
I don't know who would be willing to debate these topics with me, but an interested (and knowledgable) exe might message the admin and the debate could be arranged, starting with the presentation of the Friend's position on, say, next Monday (Sunday for those in America - Australia is a day ahead).
..I'm willing, interested, and somewhat noweledgable.. .and since you elected to start the debate yourself without admin's putting it out to the general public, I answer on thursday..in the greatest country on God's green earth, and whatever day it is wherever you may be.
..and then I get to pick the next topic!!!!!!! Oh..the power..coursing thru me!. .
..uh oh..what if why'll I've been typing here someone else has already responded?? ..

Because I have the time and inclination presently. You need to understand that one can only volunteer themselves, not others, Scott.

No I did not go from asking to "just doing". My post very clearly stated that my topic ideas were "proposals". A proposal is a tentative gesture which may or may not be accepted by the individual to whom the proposal is made. Part of debate (that is to say, debate 101) is the topic proposal. It may be accepted, it may be rejected, but it is necessary.
Since no one else volunteered yet, I select myself. What a mighty feeling..what power.. ..everyone bow..NOW!
I suspect you are trying to put into text what you assume my conscious thoughts to be. You would be wrong. As I said above, I made only a proposal. The fact you interpret a proposal to mean the definitive commencement of a debate suggests you lack some understanding of formal debating situations, whether face-to-face or in a textual format.
..my first response- the "church" has absolutly nothing to do with a persons salvation...should we define some of these terms to insure that we remain on the same soccer field.. .church, application, salvation?. ...
Definitions of terms would certainly be forthcoming in the opening statement of a debate. However, as the debate has not opened, and as a positive and negative debater has not been identified, it would be premature to engage in such activities.
..I'm willing, interested, and somewhat noweledgable.. .and since you elected to start the debate yourself without admin's putting it out to the general public, I answer on thursday..in the greatest country on God's green earth, and whatever day it is wherever you may be.
I await the Admin's blessing. However, if you want to start a thread on this topic, be my guest - I will be more than happy to engage in this issue with you.
The greatest country with the greatest President who sents the greatest military force into combat in order to destroy the greatest threat to freedom, only to find that it... does not exist? And of course, the greatest country, with the greatest technology sends its Predator Drones flying over the Middle East but cannot locate Osama Bin Laden, despite six years of effort? And the greatest President of the greatest country who is the greatest laughing stock of the world because of his great command of the English language: "Is our children learning?"
I'm sorry. It's just that I would never make claims like that about my country, just as I have never met anyone from another country who has informed me with a straight face: "mine is the greatest country in the world". I didn't think people came out with that kind of patriotic claptrap anymore. Didn't we learn to do away with all the hand-over-heart, I-love-my-land-professions, and weep-at-anthem-song during the last war?

He was just jokinnnnnnnn, Git! Sorry. It's just whenever I look at that stern face with the sun-glasses I'm reminded of my High School Physical Education instructor who was quite unpleasant. He had no interest in gawky, quiet, unconfident and unathletic teens like me who preferred reading and writing to running and jumping. His teaching included embarassment, biting remarks, total lack of compassion, and forced marches. I vowed when I became a teacher that I would never, never, treat my students like that.

I'm still waiting on GIT to show anyone compassion, but I'm turning blue! I tried to link this, but not sure how to do it. Anyway, this is one post of GIT's that truely shows compassion. It is quite a shocker, but here it is. It is post #78 from the "I'm shaking right now" thread. Dear Learned About Grace, I am deeply and truly sorry for your experiences. Reading them was difficult and I struggled to overcome a sinking feeling in my own heart.
I hope with all my heart and mind that all things will work together for your good, and I pray that as you discover joy in your salvation you can release the past more fully.
In heartfelt sincerity.
Peace be unto you in the name of the Author of Peace.
P.S. He is speaking to an EX!

So far I think we have one (serious?) candidate for the "ex" (Johnny DeRaad). Johnny or anybody else, do you want to take this on? Someone said, we would need another parallel thread for the rest of us to have our fun. Can be done. Do we try it? Vote here. (and check out the other proposal, on "under the microscope", we'll still continue with that as well)

stemming from a common conception of you on this site concerning your manner of portraying yourself seemingly above us common forks...
I'm not the shiniest spoon in the drawer, but I would never classify myself as being "above the common forks"! ;D
Concerning my country..which is the United States of America.. truely the greatest nation on God's green earth...straight as a face can be!!!, what's yours?? ..
I really don't belong anywhere in this world, or this earth. I am a man out of space, and out of time. I think of George Orwell's poem, which I memorised years ago: "Oh what a happy Vicar I might have been, Two-hundred years ago, To Preach upon eternal doom, And watch my walnuts grow." I'm not sure I would have made a happy vicar, as such, but the point is, my country is the country of Christ, whether it be above, or beyond, or in a dimension escaping comprhension. I have never fit or belonged anywhere.
I feel sorry for the people of your land having to endure persons like yourself without a sense of and heart for patriotism and pride and support of their country.
I love the natural world - the elements of God's creation - but the infrastructure of man I detest. It was not always thus. I was once a radical communist who looked for the coming of the Revolution when the oppressed workers - proletariat - would rise up and overthrow their bourgeoisie masters. Then I went and worked in a timber mill where I got to rub shoulders with the working man, and found (like Orwell) that they were vulgar, coarse, mean-spirited and actually quite objectionable. I looked about in despair and realised, "The dream of revolution is dead".
Human government does not inspire me with pride.
If you lived in America you would understand the truth of this..and you would hear it commonly spoken!..unless your a leftwing leaning, wackjob, nutcase, victory in defeat, liberal kook!..
It's nice that you have such respect and esteem for those on the other side of the political divide! ;D Actually, I am a very staunch conservative, but of the Westminster tradition, not the Republican conservatism which I find quite shrill and quite unpleasant in its rejection of social benefits and welfare. A government ought to govern on behalf of its weakest members, not create a free-for-all environment.
Learn to do away with hand over heart, I love my land, weep at the anthem . .your being taught NOT to do this???. . . ..what land are you from?
Australia is known for its quiet patriotism. There are no hands over hearts here! It is not necessary for us to be bound by a quasi-religious sentiment like a diverse and historically unstable country like the United States, with a history of slavery and civil war.
. .do you not love your country?
No I do not. I have a quiet glow of satisfaction in the benefits we enjoy, but I reserve love for the Living God, not a dead idolatry of country, such as humans seem attached toward.
. .do you support it's military?
Yes.
..pray for it's president- or leader type- ?
I pray for Her Majesty the Queen, and the Prime Minister, yes. I am a monarchist. I have a preference, by nature, for tradition.
In America, these things you lay derision on are still promoted, encouraged, and practiced! Thank God for America!! .. .where are you from again?? ..
I am sure the Iraqis blown to pieces by the Americans, and the many victims of Hiroshima thank God for America as well. I'm sorry. I really am. I should not really answer these sorts of comments, but I can't resist. The concept that America is some kind of pure force in the world, and that there is nothing but the radiance of inner light, is foolishness to me. No government is perfectly just or honourable. And American has furthered evil in the past through its various policies.
I am truely not qualified to do battle with git..this wreath I hand off to .. . .Scott!
I thought you said you would like to discuss this issue. Never mind. I suspect that no debate will be forthcoming, but the offer is now on the table for any exe to accept.

To the point of denying the Holy Spirit's work in the lives of those who do not attend and partake in your church fellowship group. [/li][li]Church buildings are unnecessary additions to Christian faith and impact on the way in which the faith is practiced.
Just as the demand in your fellowship that all preachers be homeless, unmarried, and go out in pairs... talk about unnecessary additions... [/li][li]The concept of conventions is biblically consistent.
Trivial and not worth serious effort... just like arguing over workers having cell phones... How on earth could you ever present the "Friend's position" since no formal position has ever existed on any topic/subject/idea?
