The term "get right with God" is sometimes used.
Is this possible? Can we do anything ourselves that gets us "right" with God?
What is "right" anyway?

For some: get right = obey.
For some you cannot get right because you are pre-selected by God. So, eat, drink, and be merry because you've either hit the jackpot already and are deemed right by predestination or by predestination you are cast into everlasting hell.
Oh, you might ask but what about such and such (some scripture). Doesn't matter. Just reconcile all to either winning the big lottery or being one of the many losers.

Jesus spoke of one who was "not far from the Kingdom of God" because of his love of the law. Here was someone "nearly right" in His eyes.

This is called Calvinism. There is scipture that seems to say that God chooses those whom He will save. On the other hand, there is also sripture that says otherwise. The free will that God gave us is still existent. His word is to be used for reproof and correction. In written form - The Bible- it is to be used for study: history and logic are supported throughout the Bible. In it, there is the answer to eternal life.
Last I understood about myself, as a human, I have been given the the ability everyday to choose what I want to do with my life. No one controls my inner thoughts, but me. God's word says that I have the ability to "choose ye this day whom you shall serve."
I have a choice. I can eat, drink and be merry....sure. I actually do eat, I do drink and I am merry - but, I believe in and trust in the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings. I trust Jesus with my very soul. I've been influenced by Mormons, Catholics, Jewish people and 2x2's. Nothing has ever captured truth and LOGIC as the Bible does. Joseph Smith, the Pope, Laws and Workers never hung on a cross and died for my sin, let alone ROSE from the DEAD.
God gave me a choice to believe in what Jesus did or not.
Calvinist, Armeninist...what ever your view is, the truth is we ALL have a choice to believe in Christ as the Savior and learn to spend time in a PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP with Him. Jesus is alive and well - now and will be forever.
You have a choice to believe in Him and if you do not, it is not too late. You still can.
Choose ye this day whom you shall serve.
Correct. Laws DO NOT make you right with God. No amount of SACRIFICES EVER make you right.
The point was, the guy loved Jesus, but He was afraid of letting go of tangible security. Jesus wanted Him to trust Jesus more - not money.
Like I said, no sacrifice could ever be enough.....
Only Jesus covering your sin with His life makes you right.
