I have read a lot of books--both secular and Christian--and also been to a myriad of different religious services. Many (most?) speak in some way about "the world" or "society" or "life today" etc. As in "life today can get pretty busy" or "the world is a busy place."
It's more of a generalization than anything else, and isn't meant to be inflammatory or a total slam against living life. Or at least that's not my impression.
For instance, I might tell one of my best friends, "the world is such a busy place and I'm looking forward to this vacation so I can get away from all the noise." And it wouldn't mean that I planned to go live as a hermit in the woods (or that I even wanted to) but that I needed to take a break from it to gain some perspective and come back with a better frame of mind. Maybe I'd come home and realize I really do need to weed out my closet (or my various yahoo groups) and get rid of things that are no longer serving me.
So... I'm curious, especially for those here who are Christians (2x2 or other) how has your experience of the use of the term "the world" or "worldly" has changed over the years?
For instance, when I was a little girl and I used to hear the workers talk about "the world" it meant something BAD, BAD, BAD to me... but now I don't really see it that way, even when they talk about "worldly" things. I see it more in the same way I do when I read any other Christian book or watch any other Christian program or talk in general terms to one of my good friends.
curious about other's experiences.
peace to all,
