Howdy,
I have several times come across Jesus' words here lately concerning casting stones. Here is the passage this is from.
NIV
John 8
1But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. 2At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4and said to Jesus, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" 6They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." 8Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
9At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
11"No one, sir," she said.
"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."
This passage to me is very powerful in the fact that there WAS one there without sin, and that was JESUS. So, when he said: "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." , I think it speaks of what Jesus' message to us was all about. Jesus does not condemn us for being sinners,(cast stones) rather he came to live and die BECAUSE we are all sinners.
Mathew 9
The Calling of Matthew
9As Jesus went on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector's booth. "Follow me," he told him, and Matthew got up and followed him.
10While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" came and ate with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they asked his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?"
12On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 13But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
This passage also speaks to me about what Jesus' message was all about.
I see a lot of people on this board getting all carried away with who is 'right' and who is 'saved'. I certainly do not agree with everything posted here, whether by 2x2's, ex 2x2's or the occasional monkey that somehow posts gibberish (flinging dung). However, I try to dialog with each and everyone who wants to. I know that we are all sinners here, each and every one of us. And guess what? We are why Jesus lived and died. And who did he hang out with while he was here? US THE SINNERS!!!!
Anyhow, just wanted to post this.
Love to all of you my brothers and sisters in and through Christ,
Scott
