xna I think it's inevitable that we will do this. The pluses are just too great for it not to happen. Unfortunately like most things it's got the potential of being misused. To be able to correct many of the defects that are hereditary is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. I do feel that there will need to be laws developed that will address the potential for just building a 'super' baby vs correcting debilitating hereditary issues.

Hopefully this try with eugenics will be all positive. ------------------------------------------ from the web ------------------------------- Positive Eugenics: Positive eugenics promoted the idea of encouraging the reproduction of individuals with desirable traits, such as intelligence, physical fitness, and moral character. Supporters believed that this could be achieved through policies like encouraging marriage between individuals with favorable genetic characteristics.
Rise of Negative Eugenics: Negative eugenics focused on preventing the reproduction of individuals deemed to have undesirable traits, often based on perceived racial, ethnic, or socio-economic factors. This led to the promotion of policies such as sterilization, immigration restrictions, and even euthanasia.
International Spread: Eugenic ideas gained popularity in several countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and various European nations. Laws were enacted to enforce eugenic principles, and many individuals, particularly those deemed mentally or physically unfit, were subjected to forced sterilization.
Nazism and Eugenics: The most infamous implementation of eugenic ideas occurred during the Nazi regime in Germany. The Nazis embraced eugenics as a central part of their ideology, leading to widespread sterilization, euthanasia programs, and eventually genocide during the Holocaust.

In Canada there have been charges that it still happened as late as 2017 with indigenous women. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsory_sterilization_in_Canada

What's to stop Russia from breeding super babies to provide canon fodder for it's wars of choice? Oh, I just remembered evangelicals are telling me "Russia is doing God's work" so I guess it would be OK.

Oh, I just remembered evangelicals are telling me "Russia is doing God's work" so I guess it would be OK. Given Russia's history during the height of the Soviet Union of recruiting high school age children for KGB service, it would definitely be in the realm of possibility. Any far right organization or regime would be enticed. The Third Reich would've been ecstatic with DNA technology. Thankfully, the structure of DNA hadn't even been worked out during Hitlers time. Otherwise, I have no doubt that Germany would've spent the years, or even decades before the war not practicing negative eugenics but instead creating an army of herrenmenschen. I would be far more worried about the Russians or Chinese achieving a super-human AI before they have the technical or scientific competence to create genetically modified humans on scale. We don't understand genetics well enough to get very predictable results besides the editing of very simple traits or diseases at this point. AI needs just one breakthrough by one bad actor and it will become uncontrollable and unpredictable in a matter of days. There is a wild card - the development of an AI with the express purpose of decoding and optimizing genetic code. But I don't want to think to much about that prospect.

I read where a doctor in Israel was supposed to have prescribed birth control pills to a Black woman and told her they were for some other condition -- the intent being to prevent her from producing any more Black people. Planned Parenthood was founded by racist Margaret Sanger, and American eugenics certainly was racist in nature. www.plannedparenthood.org/about-us/who-we-are/our-historyI'm not a fan of Planned Parenthood, but I think they have taken a very wise and moral stand in regards to their origins. Rather than deny and make excuses, they confront the legacy of Sanger head on, and disavow her racist eugenics leanings. I appreciate that sort of honesty.

People can be so disgusting. There are times I really do not want to identify as human. I think I'd rather be a border collie, smart, cute and just a bit sassy...
