I was told when I was a child that those that had a chance to know the truth (2x2 truth) and refused it would have greater punishment. Where do they get this idea from?
To turn this around a little... what about those who believe a lie ... will they have greater punishment?
James 3:1 Jesus did say that the masters (the teachers of the word) "shall receive the greater condemnation. In addition, He gave this warning to the scribes and Pharisees.
"To make a true statement is to say of what is, that it is, or to say of what is not, that it is not. To make a false statement is to say of what is not, that it is, or to say of what is, that it is not." -- Aristotle.

I believe it was based on Luke 12 [verse 47]And that servant, which knew his lord's will, and prepared not himself, neither did according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes. [verse 48] But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

I was told the same thing, John. This brings to mind an incident from my childhood, about fifty years ago: A very lovely neighbor lady taught us kids piono lessons. My mother was quite fond of this woman, and invited her to Gospel Meetings. She accepted, and after a few meetings, she told my mother that she would no longer be attending with us, as she was satisfied with her own church. Well, when my mother got home, I remember her breaking down sobbing, and crying "I damned that poor woman to a greater punishment in the lost eternity! She would have been better off in God's eyes if she had never heard the Gospel!" My mother truly believed this, and withdrew from outside companions because she dreaded having to ask them to Gospel meetings and having them reject the Worker's teachings.

Yes, I heard this as well. It was usually about my aunt who had once professed. The thought was that she would be severely punished for not just refusing the "truth" for herself, but refusing to raise her children in it as well.
I'm sure some people think the same of us now!

I too have always heard the same. Is Mathew 10 vs 30-42 the reference?

I grew up with the understanding that anyone who was exposed to the workers gospel & then turned away (either to begin with or later) simply proved that they did not have honest hearts. After all if a person had heard the workers message and did not respond, or later moved on...they obviously weren't really honest-hearted.

Those that depart are seperating themselves form those that are teaching false doctrine. Maybe those that leave are really in the right WAY and not the 2x2's.

Wednesday, February 02, 2005 Contact after you leave...
Under the 2x2 mindset professing people are God’s only true children and the fellowship is God’s only true way… By leaving meetings you rejected not only the fellowship but God’s plan, people, and kingdom. They believe you know where to go if you want God back into your life (meetings), and so they have little or no obligation to you since you know the right path to take to return to God’s fold.
