trutharchive.net/bill-carroll-book-of-romans-october-1939/An interesting read. A bit different from many of the worker sermons we hear today, I think. Just some more-or-less random excerpts: - I would recommend that the Lord’s people, and especially the Lord’s servants to continually read this letter and to find out Paul’s understanding of the Gospel of Christ,
- Many are content to look on Christ as a great teacher and as a great martyr, but Paul goes further, as he has the revelation of God about His Son.
- Romans 1:16 contains the key word of the whole letter, “Gospel.” Then the letter probes deep into the need of the human soul; it reveals what is wrong with humanity and with what puts humanity right.
- Faith has a basis, an object, and it must have results or it is merely a superstition,
- Saving faith, its object is a person, the Son of God. He did not come to the world with a code of ethics or rules;
- This is the Gospel; a sinner can be saved immediately through his surrender to Christ. Faith in His blood, saving faith, a Redeemer Saviour for the sinner. Therefore a man can be justified by faith without the deeds of the law.
- Romans 5: Justified by faith, there’s a new relationship and we have peace with God.
- Chapter 6, verse 13; this yielding yourself unto God is the climax of your victory, God is no longer a God afar off. Reckon yourselves dead unto sin as the Lord’s people.
- Chapter 7 gives us the conflict that takes place early in the Christian life. The Christian has two natures and we soon discover that we all have the same temptations, the same powerful affections, but there’s a new power that comes unto our lives that enables us to get the victory.
- Chapter 8 tells us of that victory. It begins with “there is no condemnation” and closes with “no separation” to those in Christ. In between there are great vital truths, evidence and proof of victory.
- It’s those who are led by the Spirit of God, who are the children of God. It’s not doctrine, it’s not theory, it’s the spirit of Christ helping you to behave as Christ behaved.
- Chapter 9, Paul speaks of his own countrymen... The closing verses give the reason why they had not attained: they sought it not by faith.
- Chapter 11 is the continuation of his consideration about his own countrymen... Paul closes the chapter with a song of praise. The ways of God are past his understanding. There were profound depths of God’s counsels that he couldn’t understand. He laid all on the altar of God and worshipped humbly as a little child, as he said, “How unsearchable, etc.” What wonderful words
- ROMANS 12: We are caused to think of Paul as a practical and personal teacher. After he had laid the foundation, then he showed that there should be an outcome. Faith cometh by hearing, but hearing must have a sure foundation. The revelation that God has given of Himself, the origin of it all,
- Faith must have an object and that object is the person of the Son of God. John spoke, John 1:14, “We beheld His glory.”
- The glory of God was seen in the humiliation of the birth of His Son, the lowly child, God incarnate.”
- By these visions of God we are transformed. Do we realize we only stand in the place that we do by the grace of God? Well might we say, God be merciful to me a sinner.

I always wonder why people don't quote the whole verse in Romans 8:1, many Christians always quote that there is no condemnation for those that are in Christ, but leave out the other half of the verse. It's there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus who walk not after the flesh but after the spirit. But there will still be condemnation for those who know the truth, say that they belong to Christ yet still walk after the flesh, loving the ways of this world and the lusts of their flesh before God. If we truly walk after the Spirit then we should be dying to self daily as we deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Jesus in the way. And his life should be seen in and through us as we too bare witness to the truth as he did, and those who truly do this will be blessed by God as God gives his Spirit to those who obey him and the spirit helps them overcome, guiding them daily in their hearts. Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Also we are not immediately saved and off to heaven as some believe, the salvation here and now is being taken out of the ways of this world, saved from the corruption of the world, death swallowed up be life. Saved from the works of the flesh as our hearts are changed to be more like that of Christ through Christ by the power of the Spirit. As we walk the walk of Jesus, turning away from the ways of this world to live by the will of God and obey his word. We are to endure to the end and keep our faith no matter what we go through to be eternally saved. And Jesus is our example to follow.
Many think they are saved and live how they please, but it is wrong to do this, we will know those truly following Jesus by their fruits. God will judge us all on what we know and how we live before him, including me, we will all be judged on what we do good and bad.

I read all of Romans 8 yesterday Wally and if people read all the chapter instead of just the first half of the first verse we can see clearly we have to live it out not just say I believe and then we are saved no matter what we do in our lives, which is what many people seem to think once they join a church and say they believe in Jesus. They seem to believe they are saved regardless of what they do and that's just not true. God will forgive us off what we did in the past in ignorance but once we know we will be judged after that. We'll know those being saved by their lives and how they live and what they say. As Jesus said you'll know them by their fruits, a good tree doesn't bring forth evil fruit and a bad tree doesn't bring forth good fruit, so we'll know the true people of God and those who truly follow Jesus by their lives. By the way you can call me Mary rather than my full title 😄😉

When Jesus spoke about the broad gate and the narrow gate he was speaking about those who identified with him. Yet Jesus does not know those who seek to enter his Kingdom by the broad gate. Jesus made it very plain, those who enter by the narrow gate will be few in number, because it is few that find the true way to the Father, ie through the way, the truth and life that Jesus showed us which leads to the Father.

I used to use it but when you came on the board with Maryhig I stopped using it. I started using it a bit recently but I have no problem with you using it as I rarely use it on here. I will have to change it to something else, just thinking what to. I notice at times you say that people believe they are saved no matter what they do with their lives. I have been in mainstream churches for a number of years now and I have never heard any one say this. What they do say is that we cannot do anything to save ourselves, no matter what our good works are. It is believing on Jesus that saves us. Good works alone will not. There are many good people but that does not save them. Believing in Jesus' life, death and resurrection does. Jesus saves, we can't save ourselves. A changed life and conviction follows belief. All churches I have been in emphasize a changed life and the fruits of the spirit. I am wondering how much contact you have had with people in other churches?

All churches I have been in emphasize a changed life and the fruits of the spirit. I am wondering how much contact you have had with people in other churches? Hi Mary, sorry for the confusion, I say to call Mary because it's more simple, but I thought because I'm called Maryhig in my posts it would be clear. But no problem just keep calling me Maryhig don't change your name. As for being saved, I have spoken to many mainstream Christians, online in forums and in real life and many believe in once saved always saved. This is a false teaching, they quote the following verse to say that they are saved no matter what they do. Romans 8:38 For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 8:39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. And also half of the first verse of Romans 8 saying there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus, but they only quote hand the verse as I have said in other posts. This isn't the truth, Romans 8:39 means that there is nothing we go through in this life that can separate us from God, no matter what it is that we go through if we have faith and trust in God and live by his will. But sin is something that we do, and it can separate us from God, wilful sin is wrong before God and if we carry on it does separate us as we put ourselves before God, but if we try to do what's right and obey the word of God, living by his will then God will strengthen us us overcome. It also says in the Bible that God gives the holy ghost to those who obey him. And James is clear that we can lose our salvation he says that sin brings forth death, this isn't natural death but separation from God. And Paul also says that he has be careful in what he does himself as he can be a castaway. So once saved always saved is a false gospel and it's what many churches teach. James 1:14 But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. 1:15 Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. 1 Corinthians 9:26 I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: 9:27 But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.
