Have just looked at the youtube clip. I have to agree with it.
Some folk I know were having a little mtg in their home on Sun morning, due to some silly reasoning to not being permitted to take part in the local church mtg. They were told their home had not been sanctified by the workers. I felt so sorry for them.
Whatever sanctified has got to do with it all??

Jesus said “Where two or more are gathered in My name, there I am.” Who sanctified the meetings started by William Irving? Certainly not Irvine! He had no more authority to sanctify a meeting than you or me! Even when I was in the Truth I had No problem with other Christians who met in homes (apart from the friends & workers (. Jesus sanctifies the meeting, not a man.

When visiting them, the husband would get on the keyboard and I on the grand piano and we played heaps of hymns together. Mostly to a faster beat than what we were brought up with!

I forget exactly why, but most likely it made for gaiety instead of somberness. It would have been showing off. A friend of mine is a Brethren pastor. She leads a praise and worship group. She says says one should worship god with joy in their heart and a smile on their face that leads to a burst of singing praise. I like that. One's belief should embody a person. Where's the love?

For clarification - I did not mean I attended their mtg. I visited socially and played hymns. Cheers.

We always had singing and the hymn books had music. The Sunday morning meetings didn't have musical instruments, piano or other if that is what you mean, but we sang hymns from the Old & New hymn book never the less.

Yes, I always found the no piano to support hymn singing ' in Sun morn mtgs but use it for wed and sun night mtgs, absurd. One mtg I attended had a woman with a strong voice but could never sing in key. I believe, we really struggled to enjoy those times ! A pianist would of helped no end. I wonder 'who' made that rule way back yonder and tradition followed through the years? Reminds me of a lady we had now and then in our meetings who would hang on and trill the last word of every line. Then there was a time at special meeting when half of the room was three or four words behind the other half.

One time I was starting the singing in a union meeting with people who dragged out every word endlessly. My wife agreed to help me speed it up after everyone prayed, and so I just started singing as fast as I wanted. It was hilarious. Half of them didn't catch up until into the second verse.

Interesting. I never heard of a Sunday meeting or a Special Meeting not having music! Acapella it was. In the home of the first Sunday meeting I was assigned to after professing, a piano was used. The first Gospel Meetings I ever attended used a piano. After that, I don’t recall instruments in any other house meeting. Special Meetings were always acapela, and always seemed drawn out and mournful.

I wonder 'who' made that rule way back yonder and tradition followed through the years? You were allowed piano in Wednesday night bible studies? We had accompaniment for gospel meetings but not fellowship meetings. The distinction I think I saw was that one was “family” and one was public. I always kind of liked the simplicity and authenticity of the accapella. Seemed we were lucky to have a strong “leader”. I guess it could have been disconcerting if it was otherwise.

There aren't that many fellowship meeting places that have a piano, or an organ, in the room. And in a lot of places it's hard to find someone who can actually "lead" the singing. One time when I was leading the singing there was a loud lady who was singing in another key. At the second verse I shifted to her key -- and she slipped on to even another key. Can't win them all.
