They don't have TVs and they aren't allowed to go to movies-- therefore, NO HARRY POTTER! I'm so sick of the hype about those books, and especially the movies. "Kids are reading again" they originally said. What-- there was nothing else to read before Rowling came along? And most of the fans I knew looked like ignorant adults who couldn't tell good prose from bad.
OK-- maybe that's too harsh. I know of smart people (over age 30) who are huge Harry Potter fans. But why oh why? Have they ever heard of Dickens, or Jane Austen, or John Steinbeck, or Gore Vidal? Something about adults making a big fuss over a kids' book just bugs me.
But I was OK with that craze compared to the movies. That dorky Brit kid with the round-framed glasses. Just looking at him makes me nauseated. And that spoiled Brit actress who couldn't care less about anything except becoming a star and wearing an expensive gown on the red carpet at the Oscars.
I wonder if the essentially neoconservative "Truth" is anti-Harry Potter because of the whole wizardry, devil-worshipping thing, or whatever the *blank* it is. Actually, I don't wonder, because I don't want to hear about Harry Potter, any more than I want to hear about Lindsay Lohan's drinking or who won the lastest NASCAR race.
I was lucky to be a professing kid in one way (though now out of the "Truth" for a dozen or so years)-- no TV, no movies, no video games, so I was able to come up with my own interests and not get caught up in the latest stupid "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie or "Ocean's 18" (due out 2014, with 12 too many already) or "Spider Man."
Unfortunately, I don't even try to have a good spirit anymore-- not required in the Church of One, Me-- and so I get a little too bent out of shape about stuff I'm trying to ignore. Like poker on ESPN, or Anderson Cooper on CNN, or "Grey's Anatomy" or "Lost" or-- just about all the stuff on TV. Yes I turn off the TV, or change the channel, but somehow ads for Dr. Phil or Fox News still attack me.
I guess it's better than having one interest (or two)-- reading the Bible (and condeming to Hell those who don't read the Bible). Maybe that's where the world is going-- secularists who watch kickboxing, and holier-than-thou Jesus freaks who just listen to Christian rock.

A group of professing people met in a certain city of a certain mid-western state and all went to Harry Potter together.
At least one of the people is a retired teacher. Another brought along a grandchild............
These are current 2 x 2's of the highest order.

I don't care for the movies or the books...I want my movies to leave me with something to think about or feel...and I don't have time to read fiction anymore...but I confess I very much enjoyed listening to HP on a book-on-tape while taking a family trip, it had a reader with a great English accent.

MANY professing kids these days are allowed to read Harry Potter (ha, I put "Potty" first..), see movies, and even watch dvds (on their computers, of course). In fact, nearly every professing family I know (with few exceptions) watch dvds on their computers.
Of course, there are a few who have (or attempted to) ban Harry Potter from their children's lives. I have cousins who aren't allowed to read Archie comic's Sabrina the Teenage Witch books because of the witch aspect.
I can see both sides of the story, but ultimately, at some point, we have to let our children make their own choices. Most children realize these are just fun stories. My dad use to make up great stories about wizardry and whatnot... and we really enjoyed them... but we knew they were just stories.

I didn't see my first movie (in the theater) until I was seventeen, so I guess my family was stricter than some professing families. And I guess I'm just a snob now. And bitter. Because people at work stand around talking about the latest "Lost" episode or how great the new "Star Wars" movie is and I feel like I'm from another planet. I'm not blaming the "Truth" for that because, once I dropped out, I could have become as trendy as everybody else. And the Friends can be trendy too, in their less spiritual moments, like as soon as meeting is over.
I just think people are easily manipulated by the hype machines out there. They don't realize that the big media companies will keep pumping out Harry Potter movies as long as the public keep eating it up. The special effects in current movies are over-hyped too-- to me they look like video games. I think so many people have been raised playing video games, they think that's what real life looks like! It's easy to see the actors were just in front of a green screen. The techies are taking over the world, and culture is dead.

I know more people outside the 2x2 fellowship who have prohibited HP from their homes than those inside. As far as movies go, I don't know anyone with children who doesn't watch movies in their homes.

Both sides of the bed are wrong when one has to get out of it at 5:50 in the morning, to sit in front of a computer at work, and after work, it's a world where the books, the movies and the music-- they ain't what they used to be (like the Duke Ellington song says, assuming people still know and care who Duke Ellington is). Fortunately, I find some pleasure in being a total grump about this lousy planet on which I was cruelly fated to spend these days.

You sound like a young cynic. Not altogether rare these days, for our eyes have been opened and we see nothing of worth in any human endeavour. I confess that I too hate life and myself. Most days I wish I was dead.
It is something you learn to live with.

Not altogether rare these days, for our eyes have been opened and we see nothing of worth in any human endeavour. I confess that I too hate life and myself. Most days I wish I was dead. It is something you learn to live with. Of course life isnt always a bed of roses, but come on. You shouldnt just learn to live with a crappy life.(not saying anyone has a crappy life--I do know mine as been at times) Get out there and live life. Enjoy it. And that doesnt mean you have to get out there and do wild and crazy things. Just find peace. Ok, Ok, I know that isnt as easy as it sounds. My life has never been all that fantastic either...but its LIFE and God gave it to me and Im thankful for it. And Im not one of those happy, slappy people either. Im far more of a pessimist than an optimist. I personally find joy and happiness in the little things. The laughter of a child. The beach. The smell of gardenias. A snickers bar. And especially when I am at Mass. That fills me like nothing else. And if Im having a particularly bad day, I can go to daily Mass. No Im not saying you would need to go to Mass, but find solace in the Bible or a great christian cd etc. Always turn to Jesus. Ok hope this doesnt sound like I slamming on anyone. I guess it hit too close to home and I needed a pep talk for myself as well a p.s.-----I too am sick of all the junk that is out there in the secular world. It can knock you down and just continue to beat you while you are down there. But remember there is always hope. Jesus will prevail!!

If you have a negative outlook on life, you will have a negative life. That's where my family and my husbands family differ SO much. They look at EVERYTHING in a negative light and therefore, they are many complaints. My family looks at everything in a positive light, even in the hardships (which there have been many) and they have a lot of happiness.

i used to go to movies all the time with kevan strube and ken aguayo, but it was always their idea, but i didn't mind, but kevan was weird about tv and movies, like they were some special treat.... yeah tv is real special. when i was 11, with no mom, dad at the bar, and my brother at the skating rink on friday night, i would put on movies til dawn for company, it was scary movies alot. i would hear noises and get scared. one time i was asleep, when my brother got home from the skating rink, i was sleep walking and having a nightmare, yelling at him, "where's steven?" and he was saying "i'm steven." and i'd yell,"i know BUT WHERE'S STEVEN ?!" then a little while later dad got home, and by then i was in bed, but awake, and hear steve telling dad he was worried about me.... dad was like ahhh who gives a sh*t?

Hey! I love Harry Potter! I was even told by a non-meeting-attender on a message board unrelated to meetings that my salvation was at stake because of this! LOL Anyway, HP is great and I'm sad to see this end. I was one of the lucky individuals who received the book 4 days before the release date. So I got a head start on reading it. I even managed to make it to an advance screening of movie #5. My kids were jealous of me because they couldn't come. ;D I also know a couple of sister workers who are very much into the whole HP storyline. In fact, it was upon their suggestion that I decided I'd like to also listen to the stories, rather than just watch the movies. The combination of both (movies and the stories) was what really drew me into Harry's world. JK Rowling is one brilliant woman. Her creative talent is simply awesome.

Well, I guess a lot of people who are creative and nice and smart enough do like Harry Potter-- and insist on typing "HP" which looks like Hewlett Packard to me. Anyway, I'm not saying it's the worst stuff ever written. It's only indicative of how trendy people are. They can't even wait until a reasonable hour to see the movie but have to go to a midnight showing. I thought the whole point of Harry Potter was it got people reading again? Young people (younger than 98). I guess it got people going to the lousy movie theaters again too.
Even so, they want the book before the official release. "It's awful waiting one more second, but no I've never read Steinbeck, who's he? Maybe I'll buy the British version too!" Do they know how excessive this sounds? Maybe while you're waiting for the book to be released you can read something else, by some "nobody" like Shakespeare or John Donne. Or at least Lewis Carroll, if juvenilia is the only route for you. I guess they are making a movie of John Donne's "The Triple Foole" and they are going to have action figures from the poem with the Happy Meals at McDonald's. I collected all of the Aeneid action figure set last year, with Dido ("that's a singer isn't it?"), and Ascanius, but Anchises is my favorite.

It's true I am lonely and sad. Maybe because everyone I know just wants to talk about "American Idol" and "Lost"and HP. Well, I don't want to talk about horse-power-- maybe HBP, hit-by-pitch, which Craig Biggio has had happened to him many times. People are so flakey and trendy. I nod my head and ask polite questions about their stuff, but when I bring up a Myrna Loy movie they look at me like I said something about their mother. As a song that nobody cares about says, "I've got the right to sing the blues." This world stinks.

Well, I guess a lot of people who are creative and nice and smart enough do like Harry Potter-- and insist on typing "HP" which looks like Hewlett Packard to me. Well, since we were talking about HP, I assumed you'd discern what "HP" stood for. Did I overestimate your ability to do that? LOL Anyway, I'm not saying it's the worst stuff ever written. It's only indicative of how trendy people are. They can't even wait until a reasonable hour to see the movie but have to go to a midnight showing. Actually, I'm not that much into HP that I'll do something like that. The advance screening I happened to see took place in the early to mid evening about 2 weeks before the film actually came out. No, there's no way I could do the midnight showing thing - for the movie or the book. I thought the whole point of Harry Potter was it got people reading again? It did. Even so, they want the book before the official release. I'm not sure if this is some sort of snark at me with regard to my getting the book early. But this had nothing to do with anything on my part. DeepDiscount.com sent out about 1200 books several days before the release date - and they're probably going to be in big trouble because of that. A rep from Scholastic (the publisher) even called me about it - and asked if I would set aside the package and not open it until Saturday. I had to inform her that I'd already opened the package and started reading the story. I was too excited to wait 4 more days. ;D Anyway, Scholastic still gave me a $50 gift certificate and a free T-shirt just for talking with them about it. That was cool. Maybe I'll buy the British version too!" Do they know how excessive this sounds? Maybe while you're waiting for the book to be released you can read something else, by some "nobody" like Shakespeare or John Donne. Or at least Lewis Carroll, if juvenilia is the only route for you. I collected all of the Aeneid action figure set last year, with Dido ("that's a singer isn't it?"), and Ascanius, but Anchises is my favorite. Anyway, smile's post seems pretty accurate - you appear a scoch cranky. The advice to lighten up was well-placed - you'll feel better if you do. ETA: If you knew anything substantial about HP, you'd know that it is most definitely not just a "kids' book". But you don't actually know this, you're just miffed at the excitement over the books. And I get that. Sometimes people just don't like it when a certain thing happens to be popular for whatever reason. For example, I hated the Titanic movie, but a lot of people thought it was great. So to a certain extent, I know where you're coming from.
