Whenever a thread is posted or replied to, it goes to the top of the index of threads. If another thread appears it will shove your thread to second place, and so on. Some people want a thread to be on or near the top, where it is more likely to be seen, and the easiest way is simply to add something to that thread. "Bump" is simply a word meaning to bump it to the top. You could add "bottom" and the thread will still go to the top!

Bump, when used in volume also means:
"I don't like a specific thread and am doing what I can to bury it back on page 2, 3, 4, or even beyond where, hopefully, people will forget about it and stop posting to it."
People who bump a few threads are trying to promote something.
People who bump dozens of threads are trying to hide something.

Bump can also mean that someone doesn't like this board and is trying to make it unreadable and difficult to navigate. What they don't realize is that registered and unregistered users have tools at their disposal to keep track of threads they are interested in. So their bumping efforts have little effect.
This has happened before. They can't go on forever. Eventually they'll get tired and move on.

I am sure glad somebody has explained what "bump" means, I was beginning to suffer the symptoms of sea sicknes because of the bumpy ride through some of these threads, especially those visited by the "Bumper."
