The water fountain at the old Lexington KY convention grounds was a gathering spot for the friends on hot days filling up their cups before a hot afternoon meeting. One year, they were kind of loud just before meeting began and Peter Hunter said SHUT UP!! Everyone went quietly to the meeting shed! Point taken!

I am not anti-English/Irish/Scotch. But old workers from that part of the world could be SO HARSH, BLUNT and UNKIND! Why I don't know.

I knew some of these old workers personally and they were be very blunt! Harsh! I was shocked when I heard some of them talked to the friends in such manner... in our days that is VERY rude.
That was how some way these old workers were raised perhaps.... Straight from the farm and went in the work... many of them didn't even finish high school. That's about right Nathan, many of these old workers came from a different era, a different culture, and a very different set of circumstances than what we experience today. It would be a mistake to apply 2007 social graces to a 1920 culturally oriented person.

If I were him I'd say it in a nicer way... "Could you please, keep your voice down, Thanks." Or "shut your piehole." Or "www.zipit.com" Or "shush that stinky sound box would ya?"

My friend Nathan-
I do take some offence to 'from the farm' -
I don't believe Peter Hunter came from the farm. Perhaps Duncan and Irene Hunter could clarify this for me. And his sister Bessie Reilly was a very sweet and quiet lady - so I doubt he learned such behaviour at home if he was like his sister when he were a wee laddie...........
I would suggest he learned to 'shout' later in life? sharon hargreaves

Hi Nathan- - I was just referring to your comment some of these workers came straight from the farm - I was just meaning that just because someone is 'from the farm' doesn't necessarily mean they don't have 'social graces.' I guess I am sensitive about 'from the farm' or maybe I am 'defensive' take your pick..... Anyway - I am sure one of the 'virtuous womans' virtues is a good goal for us all - '......and in her tongue is the law of kindness.....' sharon

Hi Sharon...
I didn't say Peter Hunter came "from the farm" so don't any offense...
I knew some of these old workers personally and they were be very blunt! Harsh! I was shocked when I heard some of them talked to the friends in such manner... in our days that is VERY rude.
That was how some way these old workers were raised perhaps.... Straight from the farm and went in the work ... many of them didn't even finish high school.
Here is your lack of understand, Nathan9. You implied that Peter Hunter came from the farm. And you directly said coming from the farm causes such behavior. Sharon was offended, as was I, not because you implicated Peter Hunter, but you derided those born on farms.

Amen! sis..... Yes, I agree with the law of Grace and Kindness virtues over rudeness and without social graces any day.« Last Edit: Today at 11:07pm by Nathan9 » And no apology. Sis? As in sister in Christ and she need not be in fellowship with the friends and workers?

1) And no apology. ~~ Nope... No apology from me when Peter H. said to the friends at convention! SHUT UP! Farm or NO Farm... That is very rude.
2) Sis? As in sister in Christ and she need not be in fellowship with the friends and workers?
~~ As an older sister... Sharon and I do not always agree on different things but we respect for each other's belief. You really do lack understanding of the English written word. Either that or you really can twist things without bothering your conscience.

Nathan, I enjoy your posts...but I do have to agree with the others on this one. It has nothing to do with what the worker said, really. You did speak offensively to anyone who was "born on a farm," IMO, that should call for an apology if it offended. That's just my opinion though..no offense to you, just sharing my thoughts. M.

No offense is taken. I will delete on the farm part from my post. No offense taken by Nathan9 and no apology given by Nathan9.

I agree that what Nathan wrote could have definitely been taken offensively, but I also don't think he intended it that way either...well, pretty much common sense tells you he didn't. It's really just about the same as saying..."close the door behind you...were you born in a barn???" How many of us have heard our moms say that...and how many of us got offended and said "Hey, that's rude to anyone who *was* born in a barn!!! Ya know? I get that it was rude to anyone who came from a farm...much more common than being born in one and I may have taken offense too if it had been me...but ya know...he didn't mean it like that. M.

There was a time when farmers were quite isolated from the urban life and hence some of them were not current in social graces. When I was growing up, many farm kids coming into town for school had some catchup to do with social behaviour. Hence Nathan's comment which probably would not have been offensive 30 years ago as that prejudice was commonly acceptable in society, even amongst most farmers.
However today, farmers are sophisticated and educated and it is understandable that a comment that "from the farm" indicating inherent bad manners would be offensive to a farmer today. I spent some time with some real farmers a week ago, old childhood buddies and they and their children are by no means lacking in social graces, in fact, quite the opposite.

Thanks, again *M*. You are a doll. ;D I did not intend to come out the way some of these felt on here... Sorry, it came out the way it did that is why I deleted "on the farm" phrase.
Some of my former companions were born and raised on the farm had very good manners, social graces, and kind men. I have known some of the old workers came straight from the farm into the work were blunt, harsh, and unkind when they talked to people sometimes.Well then "just say that you are sorry if you offended anyone" and be done with it already. ;D

Impossible, Nathan won't apologize because he's never wrong. At least in his view and that's all that matters anyway. Brad

many of these old workers came from a different era, a different culture, and a very different set of circumstances than what we experience today. It would be a mistake to apply 2007 social graces to a 1920 culturally oriented person. No kidding! Can you imagine arriving at convention three days from now and being greeted with a new list of the old rules: 1) To help in the dining area, dresses must touch the ground when kneeling. 2) To help in the dining area, blouses must have sleeves. 3) Men sit here, women and children over there. 4) Car radio antennas will get whacked. 5) If your little kids are bad, the workers will take them out for a whipping if you don't. 6) If your big kids are bad, they will sit on the front row or even with the workers. 7) If your kids act up in the dorms, they will sleep with the workers. 8) If you're caught with a newspaper, it will be confiscated. 9) If your boys hair is to short, the workers will give you a hair cut. 10) If your girls hair is to short, they won't be allowed to profess, take part, or be baptised. ...and the list goes on...

The friends knew that suffering for the workers creed would get them to heaven. Oh those cute little devils who serve darkness in the name of glory called the workers..........so naive, so easily played.

I once taught in a school where if we told the students to "shut up" we were written up by the Principal. Manners and appropriateness of language is an expectation of any professional.
I trust that the workers of today are more conscious of their language.

Nope, the workers actively slander people today.
They haven't changed. They're still the same.
yesterday, today, forever, 2x2s are still the same.
