Can anyone tell me where Sam preached mostly? Or anything about this man? Does his name have an "e" in it? I know different ones have told me their family professed thru Sam, but I can't remember who or where.
I have run across a 1913 photo with him in it, with George Walker and some others.
Thanx

Sam spent a good amount of time in Michigan. I'll e-mail you, if I can be more precise.

I found some photos of Sam in Mich. One taken in '63 and one in '69, if you're interested. There may be more; I'm still looking.

Sam spent a lot of time in the early '60's or late '50's in Western Michigan--he was around a lot when I was growing up in Grand Rapids. Actually after typing this, I think it was probably more the late 50's--don't think he actually in that field after I 'fessed in 1961--but was often a "guest" worker for gospel mtgs.

If my memory serves me correctly, there is an "e" in his last name. An interesting aside regarding Sam. He was a policeman before he "professed" and became a "worker." I, too, sat on the floor at his feet as a youth, and was mesmerized by his tales. He loved to relate the "good ones" he had pulled on others.
In a lull in his story relating to a number of people at that time, I wanted him to relate some of the "good ones" others had pulled on him. Later, I found out I was impertinent in expressing such a curiosity and paid a price for that purported disrespect which I remember still.
Sincerely,
Dennis

Sam has a special spot in my memories. He was in MI for as many years as I can recall from the 50's till he died (mid 60's.) He spent a lot of time in our home my growing up years. The word spunk comes to mind when thinking of Sam. Family pictures show he was at my 2nd Birthday party.
He had an appealing way about him. If he told you a story or joke he would watch you until he was sure you "got it".
Had a big friendly smile. I remember when he spoke he seldom looked at his Bible. It just laid open in his hand and he would raise and lower his arm as he spoke so the pages of his Bible fluttered up and down.
As far as the spelling...Charleton is correct according to my convention notes.

Sam apparently had some involvement with the Eddie Cooney excommunication. Sam told my parents in the early 60's that he was concerned about EC's complaint that he was kicked out with nothing while the overseers had a lot of money. Sam said at the convention where EC was kicked out, there were 3 (if I recall) overseers who all opened their wallets and gave EC half of what they had. In those days, the overseers didn't have money in the bank so this would have been a significant offering to EC regardless of the amount.
Sam also related to my parents that one of the concerns about EC when he was kicked out was his feigned humility. According to Sam, EC is alleged to have sewn patches on his perfectly fine trousers and then would point out his impoverished state with his patches as proof. I can't say that Sam's story was true, but it is true that he told it. It's the sort of story that keeps the faithful on board when someone gets the boot.

Was Sam ever laboring in Tennessee? I have a photo of him looks like someone dated it in 1956 by a Tennessee auto. Maybe he was just on some kind of rounds.

Bumping this to make a correction:
In The Secret Sect Book in the back of the book is a copied document "Christian Conventions" signed by Samuel Charlton. The previous spelling in the post and thread is incorrect. (Sorry Cherie - I was wrong) RA
