ehumn... not as as a mythical creature that we see portrayed in the past. I thought I had heard of something like that and found this:
According to the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD), sirenomelia is an “extremely rare” congenital disorder where a baby could be born with their legs partially or completely fused.
Signs of mermaid syndrome also include lower spine or lower limb anomalies, gastrointestinal issues, and absence or underdevelopment of the kidneys.
The NORD fact sheet also states that babies with sirenomelia may be born with one foot or no feet at all, or with both feet intact but rotated externally.
Although sirenomelia is known to affect only one in every 60,000 to 100,000 births, mermaid babies typically do not live long, with the first such case in India only surviving for 10 minutes after birth.

I thought they were similar to Sirens from Sirenusa but Sirens were supposedly a woman bird mix. Pliney the Elder discounted them as pure fable. I like that term

Here's what Live Science says about them and a bit on their history. If you've been to the Bird Cage Theatre in Tombstone Arizona they have a preserved little 'thing' (don't know what else to call it) that does resemble a shriveled up old man for the top part and a fish tail from the waist down. It's not very big, and is ugly as can be. They called it a merman. But I think its fable started from the similarities the manatees have to the legends. Also there is a condition where humans have been born with fused legs but I've never heard of any that lived long enough to become adults. Okay, I'll revise that last sentence. When I wrote they don't usually live I went looking to see if any ever did and came up with this. Have no idea if its true or not. Maybe I should check snopes. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1223035/Girl-born-mermaid-syndrome-dies-aged-10.htmlOkay checked snopes and this is all I could find related to the 'Mermaid syndrome'. Apparently there was a thing going around on facebook saying if you shared this plea you could also donate money to help the little girl. CNN and facebook said that wasn't the case and advised no one to donate, but both of them did donate apparently. Here is that link www.snopes.com/inboxer/medical/cerron.asp

A mermaid is as, or more believable than some of the other bible beasts. I think they are just metaphor, and myth.

They must have thought they were real back in the Bible days as the exhortation was to beware of divers temptations.
