I wasn't surprised in either election. Both states have large urban areas that help disenfranchise much of the rural areas similar to Washington and Oregon. It is a different scenario than in Montana where rural voters are concerned about mineral issues.
Today's Democrat Party in Richmond is far more liberal than in the the past. The burbs of Northern Virginia are loaded with government employees in the DC metro. New Jersey is liberal and Chris Christie's popularity was low and the 8 year change factor affected that race. Is there a blue wave in 2018 similar to the 2010, 2014 and 2018 red waves? Maybe. But Terry McAuliffe won Virginia's race in 13 and that didn't produce a blue wave in 2014. Will rural Virginia secede and form the state of Liberty? On the national level, will the GOP start putting more money into Wisconsin and Minnesota while starving the Virginia GOP candidates of cash in the future?

Loudon, Prince William and Fairfax counties are overpowering the rest of the state. And there are a lot of government employees in the Chesepeake areas of Norfolk-Newport News-VA Beach area. Virginia is becoming a nanny state. They won't allow radar detectors in this little California prison. Conservative families should move to Tennessee, Georgia, SC, etc..
