How things have changed. When "batching" abroad in the work during the 60's, we had no bathing facilities, little heat and little food. Fact, without dieting at 6'3" I went from 220 lbs down to the 160's. I did always have a mattress of sorts and sheets and blanket, however toilet facilities were ocasionally merely a stool in an unheated external closet in the entry hallway, where temperatures were quite cold.
When with our friends, I WAS always treated like royalty which I never felt as deserving, for I did not, appreciative as I was. Reading the posts by some to this forum are completely beyond my knowledge and understanding, and I believe them to be in error.
Once when feeling condemned over all that WAS my portion at other times as a worker, a wiser older man simply advised me, "you have left all, have you not? Then if at moments you receive 100 fold, thank our Lord and God."
Some comments from an ex from over a quarter century.

Yes Ma'am. It really tis I. Had and recovering from a stroke. Working hard at it.
Since it occurred, pro boards has updated their JAVA Script, and this old first generation IPad simply is not up to it, so must access the forum in this manner, cannot address individual threads, so must post in this manner. I am sorry.
Must have surgery on eyes to be able open them. Pre op exam next week.
As to these posts themselves, have sworn to myself not to submit to this apparently contagious attitude of "I, Me, My and Mine" that has become so prevalent in posts to this forum, easy to be overcome by it, for sure.
Just want to be fair, and in every post, smile, too little time left perhaps? Sure miss old friends, and you are one of them Mary. Life would be intolerable without Katie

Rememberon more. Our "batch" had a "skafferri" but no refrigerator. What is that? It is a kitchen cabinet screened to the year round northern exposure colder out door temperature. Don't know of an English word for it. Had a very little man as a companion, who did not believe there was any need for portion sizing, (smile) so those were very hungry days. Reporting such things upon returning to the USA brought immediate and stern rebuke.
No wonder now that fellowship has the problems it does. Deny, or hide any report over the years that did not reveal its preachers and practices in anything but the most favorable light. Nothing but sorrow and grief from it for some, perhaps even for those thought by some to be naught but "trolls."
Perhaps, rather, they too have very sad experiences with the group. In any case, life is very short so few should expect desired changes anytime soon.

Dennis J. According to Google Translate, the Swedish word "skafferri" translates to the English "pantry" or "larder."

Hiya, Gene. Thanks for that comment. Guess it is a difference of opinion, or (gasp) a change of historical meanng.
Knowing many a pantry, (in fact in this remod one has been added to our kitchen. Never had a larder, however always imagined them to be somewhat larger. Larger homes in Sweden have pantries most often containing a "skafferri." The word just has no equivalent in English that To use, at least have never found one nor was told of when asking so many years ago.
Most known as a "skafferri" in Sweden are about the size of a small cabinet with a screen opening to the cooler outside, and somewhat insulated from indoor temperatures.
Glad for your comment, though.

I have seen several "cool cupboards" in homes from the 1930's. They have always been 'upper' cabinets where there was a screened opening to the outside on the bottom shelf and another above the top shelf. I was told they were for keeping things like pies 'cool' as this climate is rarely below freezing.

Yes there were some of those at my grandparents, I believe they did have a name, will try to find out, we also had a 'meat safe', which was a little more decorative, some were quite ornate. They were made from pressed metal and had tiny holes in patterns on all sides, this allowed for ventilation, if kept in a breezy, shady place the meat remained fairly cool and kept out flies.
