I have a great-aunt in Ireland that is married to a Pearson. I'll bet some of the 2x2s in Australia know of the Pearson family there as well.

This was when the group was known world wide by the name given them as "Cooneyites" and should not be mistaken for the group later so called. After his excommunication, Jack Carroll wrote rejoicing at expecting to be free of the name,"Cooneyites."

The story has been controversial for a long time, however from recorded history of Irvinism dated to 1910 in Ireland, there is little wonder that the characteristics of the “Cooneyites” eventually led to violence. This book by the editor of The Impartial Reporter tells in detail of how the “Cooneyites” acted within an already strained two party “Christianity” in Ireland, Presbyterian v Roman Catholic. Note - the founder of the "Cooneyites" was in 1921 already two-three years in his hotel in Jerusalem derogation his "The Testimony" which kicked him out. But his example of ridiculously antagonistic rants against ALL churches is documented in numerous accounts, not the least of which is the book, THE TRAMP or GO-PREACHERS by Wm Trimble, 1910 . THE TRAMP or GO-PREACHERS by Wm Trimble, 1910 Downloadable for free at drive.google.com/file/d/1YCNcM9bXU7EfP9mh6iGgEYapKx7ATRPy/view?usp=sharing Edit - All that notwithstanding, it is debatable whether there were any religious undertones to the executions of the Pearsons . According to the Wikipedia the Pearsons claimed they were members of the Church of Ireland, not Cooneyites. But Cooneyites may have presented a version aimed at gaining sympathy for Cooneyism as a 'persecuted' church, which has long been a 2x2 self-concept drummed up and blown into extreme proportion in spite of no evidence of any such thing. As the story shows several versions from different sources, in may have been a purely political escalation that caused some (possibly at that time attracted by Cooneyism) going over the edge on nothing more than political views. I knew some Irish people in the 1970s when the conflicts between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland was still violent. We marvelled at them living under the threat of car bombings and such every day. And even the conflict bwteen Catholics and Protestants causing the violence was controversial, some claiming the IRA was actively blaming the political violence it caused upon a 'religious war.' God only knows - when such occurrences become global media stories, it becomes almost impossible to determine fact from fiction.

After receiving compensation for their land, the Pearson family moved to Australia in stages, the last family members arriving on January 17, 1930. One daughter, Emily, married and lived in England, while the rest of the family relocated to Australia until their deaths. William Pearson Sr. was born in 1863 and died in 1934. His wife Susan was born 1870 and died in 1947 in Victoria. Her death certificate states the Minister at her burial was J. F. Jones, Christian Assemblies of Australia . According to Alan Stanley's book, their son Sidney Pearson continued in the 2x2 Sect. David Pearson left the 2x2 Sect and died April 25, 1991. I do not know the church affiliation of the other Pearson family members--after the murders.

Thanks Cheriekropp – that info does put some better fact upon the Wikipedia stating that the Pearsons were Church of Ireland – that was according to the census of !911 – they surely could have become, and probably were Cooneyites by 1921 at the time of the shootings.
Controversy still remains however because one version has the Pearson boys firing and seriously injuring causing death of IRA personnel first – the old who shot first thing. Certainly an organization such as the IRA would defend its right to execute on the grounds of the boys firing first – whether their version was fact or not. But one thing is clear, the Pearson boys were armed in approach of IRA personnel manning a road blockade.
Just try approaching any army or police personnel bearing arms, anywhere, especially a road blockade.
