That would be the first Kiwi horse to win for a long time. You're not wrong. And both Prince of Penzance and Criterion were from overseas stock. The bloodstock industry is all over the place not that I know much about the industry. Get caught up in the office sweepstake on Melbourne Cup day with my two horses finishing way back this year! Howitis it's the race that stops two nations!

I think Rob Sargison they'll soon consider it the 'world stopping' race . And yes the horse although bred in NZ had blood lines from USA, Canada, and Great Britain, maybe even more, big $'s in bloodlines, both losing and gaining!

Roselyn T: I avoid consuming animal products and, to the best of my ability, adhere to a cruelty-free lifestyle. Non-human animals suffer terribly and die horrible deaths and I have chosen not to support this. Horse racing is another industry which is driven by greed and thrives on the cruel exploitation of sentient beings.

Yes I agree with what you say to a point, but when animals are destroying crops (Kangaroo's and Rabbits) for example, what do see as the solution? Another pest that should never have been bought to Australia is the Cane Toad, so what is the solution to that other than killing them?

I hope you will do some research into those worthwhile questions you posed Roselyn T. Vegan = cruelty free = abhorrence of suffering in all sentient beings not just humans. If the criteria 'destroying habitat' is applied, then the human animal is the most damaging on the planet. As we absolutely do not condone the culling of humans, neither is there an excuse to expose other animals to the brutal methods presently used. Population control is the compassionate method to preserve the environment from further destruction and science has progressed to a point where the control of any environmental threat can be imposed minus cruelty based on the adage 'prevention is better than cure'. However, the human species' overwhelming disregard for the suffering endured by other animals means compassionate interventions are too often replaced by ad hoc cruel methods such as poisoning or trapping of 'pest' animals and their resultant slow, agonizing deaths.

So joanna, are you saying you are a vegan? You haven't really answered the question with regards to kangaroos, rabbits & cane toads. Is a farmer suppose to just let kangaroos destroy his crops? Should we let cane toads destroy other animals ? What about flies, cockroaches, mosquitoes, fleas, mice, fire ants ?

Every dog has its day. Years ago the NZ bred horses did very well at Melbourne but have not done so well lately. With Richie MaCaw and Dan Carter retiring the All Blacks may find that some other team has the edge on them. McCaw looks like he is going to get his CPL for helicopters. Hopefully he doesn't cut corners under the ref's nose when out flying as the consequences are more than just a yellow card.

Is a farmer suppose to just let kangaroos destroy his crops? Should we let cane toads destroy other animals ? I recently had someone delete me as a facebook friend when I posted the picture of a 68 pound coyote that my hubby shot with a bow. There is no limit or closed season on coyotes in my area as coyotes are considered vermin and destroy deer herds. My hubby was deer hunting and saw many a young deer brought down by coyotes and only partially eaten. The coyote just happened to be in the right place at the right time, or from the coyote's point of view, in the wrong place at the wrong time. Here is a bit I wrote awhile back... In Tales of Adam, Daniel Quinn writes, “God is life in abundance wherever life is found, but not for all in every season.” When man was a hunter gatherer, his very life was in the hands of the god(s). If his arrow missed the deer, it was believed it was the deer’s turn to live and the man’s turn to go hungry. Life was indeed in the hands of the gods. Upon the rise of agriculture and the domestication of animals, man was now in control of when and what he ate, thus increasing his chances of survival, and no longer being dependent on the whim of the god(s). That is until the coyotes and wolves got hungry and decided to raid the hen house and the sheep pen. Now man was not only in charge of his own life, but he was in charge of who ate and who did not, who lived and who did not. Animals were not killed for food, but killed so that they would not take food away from man. The lives of the animals were no longer in the hands of the god(s). And need I talk about what changes ancient and modern medicine has made in our lives? My husband’s mother was kept alive in the hospital for several weeks this past December till it was decided that there was nothing more that could be done for her. She was then offered to her god for the decision of when she would die. I find that terribly ironic. And so it goes… What about flies, cockroaches, mosquitoes, fleas, mice, fire ants ? I have no problem killing any of the critters on your list. All are a threat to me. Which brings up the question, why do I eat meat. Because I like meat and eat a lot of it and I don't have to butcher it myself. Just being honest.

Roselyn T It is really inspiring that you are interested in reducing suffering and given I've taken so long to reply, am sure you will have found already the answers. If not, just google search cruelty-free and insects/ 'pest' animals. You will find valuable information on PETA or Animals Australia. The way our species treats the vulnerable, whether human or non-human, is abhorrent and it is lovely that you are showing concern.

joanna, I know all about PETA and Animals Australia ! But you still have not answered the question, is a farmer suppose to let kangaroos destroy his crop? Do we let cane toads kill out other species of animals ? Should we just let cockroaches & mice have the run of our homes?

Sorry Roselyn, it would be easier for you to do your own research. I am giving you the benefit of the doubt and hoping you are not posing this most common of questions for a 'trolling' type exercise. It is a vegan cliche " give me a dime for the number of times I've been asked the same Q's you are asking and I'd retire" Here is a link which will help you: Avoiding cruel behaviors

"Are there spiders sharing your home? If you must evict them, carefully trap them in an inverted jar and release them outside. If you find predators such as ladybugs, snakes, and praying mantises in your yard or garden, the best policy is to let them stay—they’ll help eliminate other “pests.” www.peta.org/about-peta/faq/what-about-insects-and-other-pests/So if you have a snake in your yard, let it stay there !! Great advise if you have young children ! Especially if its an Eastern Brown !
