You had made the comment that hell was what you made it. I'm interested in hearing what you mean by that. Also, is heaven what you make it too? If this is the case and hell is what you make it, what role would God have in anything then? Obviously I'm a bit confused by your previous answer and what you have answered now. I believe it's all to do about God, and that what we do in this lifetime we are judged on. God gives us a chance to know him, he will let us know in our hearts what's right and wrong, and we have a choice. if we purposely do wrong things we are judged on that, and I believe that Satan tempts us in the heart to do these wrong things. I believe our conscience is from God, and we are judged in which way we go, whether we listen to what's right or what's wrong. And Jesus came and showed us the way. And if we follow him he will give us strength, through the holy spirit to overcome Satan. Sorry I'm tired, I have to go to sleep, it's 1.30am So, -if God tells us, "Now go and smite (fill in the blank) and utterly destroy all that they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass," Do you think that " he will let us know in our hearts what's right and wrong, and we have a choice" to do as HE says or to not do it?

Baloney. Our laws, our culture, our behaviors, all of these shape the next generation for the rest of their lives. Is prostitution not wrong? That is the question. Is libertarian philosophy not inherently licentious? When is pragmatism of the Lord? When is it moral and ethical compromise? Why do you believe prostitution is wrong? That is the real question!
Why do you think that all sex is licentious? That is the the real question! Just why is sex the subject of all your posts as the worse "sins" possible?
St. Augustine's sure has you buffaloed with his views about sexuality. Augustine as a source of Western society's negative attitudes about sexuality.
Whether Augustine is directly responsible for the traditions that came down to history or simply articulated the prevailing viewpoint is open to debate.
However, Augustine clearly had a significant influence in shaping Western ideas about sexuality. He certainly seems to have you hooked.
Did you have an open marriage? Is promiscuity virtuous?

We shouldn't purposely sin, but we do? It should be we shouldn't purposely sin so we don't! I hope I don't purposely sin or I'm in trouble! And I don't expect God to let me off! And how do you know I do? Your judging me without knowing me! I sin, but it's unintentionally, if i have sinned on purpose since knowing God in my heart and I've done it intentionally then so be it, that's my fault and God will judge me. You believe that about Jesus' crucifixion. But I disagree, my God is a God of love. Not one that turned his face away and poured wrath out in his innocent son forsaking him at the time he needed him most! I don't believe God would do this. As I said, God will judge my heart. Not man! I know you do simply because there is not a person on earth that doesn't If someone like Peter can do it or David then I think most people might be guilty as charged! My God is a God of love and justice. You need to understand how God's wrath was completely satisfied in Jesus while He was on the cross. For Christians, it is the pivotal time in history. And it's the basis for why we believe that we will not face God's wrath on the judgement day - when all will be judged. I think there are many people that don't purposely sin, what do you mean by purposely sinning? Would you purposely lie? You believe Peter purposely sinned, well ok just say he did. But at that point Peter hadn't received the holy spirit! He received it after Jesus' resurrection, as we do when he's resurrected in our hearts. John 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost I don't believe, if we truly have the holy ghost within us, we will be intentionally sinning. If we are intentionally sinning, then the holy Ghost wont be there long. That's why it's a narrow way, and few there will be that find it. Also I've been pondering on God turning away from Jesus and then last night I saw this. John 16:32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. God didn't forsake Jesus, Jesus himself said God would be with him. Also I found this John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. As he spake these words, many believed on him. I knew God wouldn't leave Jesus. He wouldn't leave Jesus, because Jesus was doing his will. If we intentionally sin, then we are not doing his will, and he may leave us!

I find these quasi-historical/philosophical analysis a tad tiring. As if one guy like Augustine can shape an entire civilization's view of sexuality! Methinks this guy was just expressing common views - views which didn't really change just because he reflected them.

Hope you had a nice sleep maryhig. You didn't sleep long and then you have kids. But guess being Sunday helps. I feel for you having to answer all on this thread. Gets time consuming and tiring. I've been reading with my husband. And we have our mums coming for dinner. But we have the meeting first. So yes, a busy day

Hey Mary, I've just seen you said it must be time consuming, yes, especially as I'm on my phone and using Swype! But, I've been given a pc by my brother, although I have yet to set it up, and guess what? I can touch type!

Bert, as usual, you are being true to form. You don't know enough about church history to make any kind of analysis of St. Augustine .
Neither do you know the meaning of "philosophical."
Augustine's Views on sexuality
"For Augustine, the evil of sexual immorality was not in the sexual act itself, but rather in the emotions that typically accompany it. In On Christian Doctrine Augustine contrasts love, which is enjoyment on account of God, and lust, which is not on account of God.[140] For Augustine, proper love exercises a denial of selfish pleasure and the subjugation of corporeal desire to God. He wrote that the pious virgins raped during the sack of Rome were innocent because they did not intend to sin.[141][142]
He believed that the serpent approached Eve because she was less rational and lacked self-control, while Adam's choice to eat was viewed as an act of kindness so that Eve would not be left alone.[143]
Augustine believed sin entered the world because man (the spirit) did not exercise control over woman (the flesh).[144]
Augustine does, however, praise women and their role in society and in the Church. In his Tractates on the Gospel of John, Augustine, commenting on the Samaritan woman from John 4:1–42, uses the woman as a figure of the church.
According to Raming, the authority of the Decretum Gratiani, a collection of Roman Catholic canon law which prohibits women from leading, teaching, or being a witness, rests largely on the views of the early church fathers—one of the most influential being St. Augustine, the Bishop of Hippo.[145]
The laws and traditions founded upon St. Augustine's views of sexuality and women continue to exercise considerable influence over church doctrinal positions regarding the role of women in the church.[146

BUT OF COURSE WHAT DO THEY KNOW! , BERT, YOU TO WRITE TO THEM & SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT!

Do you recall the camel and the bible issue with Wiki? Wiki holds that camels didn't exist in Old Testament times, regardless of how many camel carvings, pottery, bones and petroglyphs going back thousands of years before Abraham. Wiki is ultimately opinion. And Augustine's views were quite common in Roman and early European times. And personally I find Augustine a tad flaky.

Now calm down Dmmichgood.
You need to have a "gut feeling" for things which pertain to human nature. Fer instance when people say Hitler started WWII we should ask, "Really, on his own?" The Roman Catholic Church persecuted witches. "Really, and there was no superstition in medieval times?" Akhenaten was the first man to worship a single god. "Really, you nailed it down to the very first guy?" I guess it's because history requires heroes and dates we get a lot of this stuff.

"akhenaten was the first man to worship a singlegod. Really? YOU SAY THAT "Akhenaten was the first man to worship a single god."
Really? Akhenaten REIGNED IN EGYPT FROM 1336 BCE UNTILL 1334 BCE.
ABRAHAM LIVED AT LEAST BY 1763 BCE AND WORSHIPED A SINGLE GOD ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE WHICH YOU HAVE SO MUCH FAITH IN.
YET YOU CLAIM Akhenaten was the first man to worship a single god?
OH, INDEED, I AM AWARE OF WHAT IS IN YOUR GUT, BERT!

We could go on for a long time Of course, the Father was with Jesus and supported Him. There can be no closer relationship. After all the Father is in the Son and the Son in the Father. So you need to ponder why there were 3 hours of darkness, why Jesus felt the Father had forsaken him, what happened spiritually on the cross. I try to follow and obey Christ as best I can because of what He has delivered me from and the victory He has already won. It is finished - as He said. I don't follow Christ because I feel He somehow needs my righteousness or I could be ever good enough to enter heaven because God in His word has told me that's a fruitless exercise. I love Him and I love others because He FIRST loved me and died to set me free. I believe the darkness covering the earth was because Jesus was dying. Spiritually, Jesus is the light, and they were putting the light out. And Satan was doing his works of darkness. It was the the time of Satan, and of wicked men in his hands. Just look how they mocked him! Torturing him saying "if your the son of God come down from the cross" taunting him whilst he was dying, and it wasn't one or two of them, but many of them. None of this was Gods works. Luke 22 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness. I really don't believe it's my righteousness though Ross, I have never said that. I just have to do the works of God, and the bible clearly says I have to do this. Its Christ bringing the holy spirit that's saving me from sin. It's Christ's righteousness. I'm blessed that God has even looked at me! But as you said we could go on and on, but i love God and its wrong to go on. As you said you follow God as best as you can, and so do I. God looks at our hearts and judges them, and I truly believe that it is important that sin is leaving our hearts. But we both believing in God, shouldn't go so far. I'm wrong to do that! I have only said the above to answer your question.

They weren't really mocking him were they maryhig? It was spiritual. Just pointing out that you can't say one part was spiritual and the other not. It all occurred naturally. The Bible is one of the most practical books there are giving events as they happened. You can look for extra revelations in it but it does not take away that these events actually occurred. Mary, do you in your heart truly believe that the God you love, a God full of love would turn away from Jesus at the hour he needed him most? Do you really think he would do that? Jesus himself said the father never leaves him because he does his will! I don't believe he would forsake him at all! I believe he was strengthening him. And with him the whole time!

I believe that Satan has been doing his works of darkness since the fall not just those 3 hours. One explanation could be that God turned away because He could not bear to see the suffering. Now that's something I hadn't thought about until now. The general belief is that the Father turned away because Jesus at that point took the sins of the world on his shoulders so to speak. The 3 hours were when God turned away for whatever reason. Jesus said, My God, My God, why have you forsaken me. I will have to go over and read the thread properly later as I have only skimmed over it. I agreed with what Ross wrote. Ok, we'll have to agree to disagree. Because we can go on and on. And its not right. Thanks for explaining what you think it meant

I think Peter was very aware that he was denying Christ. He just lacked the courage and strength to do any differently. I don't think he did myself, I think it was unintentional sin. Matthew 26 And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee. Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew. And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly. Mark 14 And the second time the cock crew. And Peter called to mind the word that Jesus said unto him, Before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me thrice. And when he thought thereon, he wept Luke 22 And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew. And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And Peter went out, and wept bitterly. In Matthew it says he remembered the words of Jesus, and in mark, it says when the cock crowed he thought there upon and wept! But I think Luke is the clearest. It said the lord looked upon Peter, and peter remembered the word of the lord and he went out and wept. And I feel were like this. We do things wrong and sin in our lives, then Christ through the spirit shows us in our hearts and we will realise we've sinned and we should be ashamed and repent, Hopefully! We all sin, but it shouldn't be intentionally. But the stronger we are in God, the stronger our conscience will be working against sin before we do it. Still we do all unintentionally sin! Judas' sin was intentional, and Satan in his heart led him to hang himself. We have to be careful, and not listen to the wrong thing in our hearts. Or we can be carried away and be dead to God in the spirit. And it will be of it own doing. I believe that we can't take God for granted, and we shouldn't be purposely sinning. Maryhig, You may have missed my response to this post, I'm curious what your thought is. Here it is again; So when Peter said that he had no idea who that man was - 3 different times - he had no idea he was lieing?

Here it is again; So when Peter said that he had no idea who that man was - 3 different times - he had no idea he was lieing? Hi JD, yes somehow I've missed your post, sorry about that. It must be because I'm answering so many at once. I'm only on my phone I believe he wasn't lying, I believe didn't realise until the cock crowed. Because when the cock did crow, it says he remembered Jesus' words and wept bitterly. Either way, neither of us will know exactly what was in Peter's heart at that time. But as I said to Ross. He hadn't yet received the holy spirit. He was a different person once he had. And so should we be. We can't intentionally sin, and say Jesus has done or all for me so I'm saved regardless! Gods people are not to sin on purpose. It's no good saying we shouldn't but we do. We should be saying, we shouldn't so we don't! And if we do unintentionally sin and then realise after. We are to go and pray to God and say sorry and mean it. And don't do it again. If we are purposely sinning, then the spirit is letting is know beforehand through our conscience because it's intentional, and we're doing it regardless. And this is wrong and we can't take God for granted.

I have only said the above to answer your question. Thanks - yes Jesus was dying in a natural sense. But they weren't putting him to death spiritually! Rather, he was victorious over sin and death that day... I'm sure the Holy Spirit is sanctifying your heart and mine and making us more like Jesus - it is His work and He does it perfectly - we are just the imperfect ones! However, you were justified and clothed with Christ's righteousness when you repented and turned to Christ initially. That's when you received the Holy Spirit and that's when the Holy Spirit starting His work within us - not to rescue or save us because God had already done that....but to keep us pointed to Jesus and to live in newness of life. I didn't mean they were putting him to death spiritually, I meant they were putting the light out, I.e he's the light and they were putting him to death in his flesh. He is still alive and comes back in his people. Jesus said John 12 Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them. I think you are reading what I write in a different way to what I mean, I keep saying it's not my righteousness, but you keep saying it's Christ's not ours, I do know that! In God, I would be nothing without him, he through the spirit is cleansing my heart and its a daily thing, because the dirt builds up quickly again if left. Just like our natural houses, dust accumulates daily, so does the dust of the flesh, that is why Paul said, he died daily! But because Christ is righteous, that doesn't mean i don't have to do anything. Jesus said, we must deny ourselves. When I'm tempted, within my heart to sin, i must deny it. And if the spirit is strong within me. Then i will overcome. If not, i won't. I received the holy spirit when I truly repented, not just by saying it but doing it, when I walked away from the world and started to deny my flesh and gave my heart to God! I know, because I've felt the difference within me. And if I start to listen to my flesh, and start to live wrong again, then it will be taken from me! God won't be mocked!

I know, because I've felt the difference within me. Likewise, you are suggesting that my view is that we don't have to do anything! I have said from day 1 that we have deny ourselves, die to self, follow and obey Jesus etc. The difference is simply this - I'm not following Jesus to somehow earn His righteousness or favour so that I can be rescued and saved from death and God's wrath. I'm doing it because I have already been rescued and saved. By His grace and what He did on Calvary for me, I have been justified. He is now my Christ and King. I am now His servant in His Kingdom and I honour and serve my King for giving me a new life in a new Kingdom. It's a gift he has given me. He doesn't want payment for the gift - but he does want my complete gratitude and thankfulness each day in response to what He alone Has already accomplished. He doesn't want payment? yes he does. He wants our life! You're saying that you are saved already, but you still have to deny sin regardless. Yet it's ok if you intentionally sin because your saved? It makes no sense.

I think we sin regardless of whether we are aware of it or not. Its after the fact that we recognise our mistakes. I dont think it is possible to be 100 percent conscious of sin prior to it happening. Yes we have the holy spirit to convict us. Without being superspiritual we need to live our lives.keeping short accounts is good if we can. My charactor sometimes enjoys the things I shouldnt be enjoying. Then we declare we are not perfect. That is not an excuse to deliberately sin and go against the teachings of christ.

Without being superspiritual we need to live our lives.keeping short accounts is good if we can. My charactor sometimes enjoys the things I shouldnt be enjoying. Then we declare we are not perfect. That is not an excuse to deliberately sin and go against the teachings of christ. No we can't be 100 percent conscious about our sins, your right. But when we are, I believe we shouldn't do them. I believe that this is going against God. But one thing all these conversations have done, is made me realise how sinful I am. I have a craving for sweet things. And I find it hard to give them up. And the other day I made a cuppa for me and my husband. And I went to get a Kit Kat from the cupboard and straight away I got a conscience. I realised what I had said to Ross about intentionally sinning. And because I crave for these things, then I know it's wrong for me to have them. So I couldn't eat it. My hand was there, but my conscience was too strong to let me. i know God was letting me know that I'm sinning too! I haven't had chocolate or sweets since. So I know this will be a battle, because it's so strong in me, but I can't tell others about wilfully sinning and then do it myself. So now I know in my heart that I'm wrong. I must fight it. And with the help of the spirit I can.

I can't tell others I believe something is wrong, and then do it myself, can i? anyway, I might lose a few pounds. Although it's not the sugar intake that's a sin, it's the craving! It may be hard now, but it will I be a good outcome. See, as soon as I said about wilful sin. I've been tested! This always happens to me!

He doesn't want payment? yes he does. He wants our life! You're saying that you are saved already, but you still have to deny sin regardless. Yet it's ok if you intentionally sin because your saved? It makes no sense. I think he might already have taken control of your life when you repented turned to Him!! You've already turned to him and have been born again!! He gave you the new life - by His grace. And so you live for Him. Of course, you'll continue to sin until the day you die. But if you continue to trust in Him and follow Him He'll continue to clothe you in His righteousness. I have never said that it's okay to intentionally sin because you are saved - please don't say that! Have a study of the difference between justification and sanctification - what God does when we repent and turn to Him (Paul and others talk about it heaps) and then what the Holy Spirit (God) does in our lives as we live for Him. Oh blimey, I'm getting confused in your beliefs about sinning, I think I'll just do what's right in my heart as you will in yours

I think we are saying very similar things now I've just read that, because I agree with what you have said, and understand more by the way you have written it this time. The only exception is that I don't believe that i am completely saved until the end if my life, whereas I think you do. That I will always believe, because Jesus said we must endure to the end to be saved. Endure means suffer, and suffer is denying the flesh and the world. And we are in this fleshly body and sin. And we don't know what we will do in the future. So I just put my faith in God and follow Jesus and if my heart remains right toward God. I believe that Christ will guide me and stay with me and the spirit will teach me daily. And this I must follow and do until the end if my life. And then I will know if I'm going to heaven because only God can decide that.

I know my enemy and it isnt sugar I think its lust of the eyes for that yummy piece of almondine or something else. Im joking...x Wilfully sinning for me would commiting adultery or robbing the bank or running a coin down the side of someones car because they pinched a car space. Etc. Or telling a worker he is out of line because he cheesed me off.

I understand what you mean, but just after I said that to Ross, I got a conscience about eating too much sweet food and its not the food. It's the craving. And I can't tell others that we should listen to our conscience and not do it myself, anyway I might be a size 10 this time next year .
