and free speech goes right out the window... Free speech and freedom of expression are not entirely free. They are consequences involved. Experience has shown that many folks have had to pay very dearly for their mouths and for other means of expression, and some still do so. Just have a look at these two words: libel and slander including defamation of character. wisegeek.org gives an insight.

Religions have the liberty to exist, but if they slander or cause prejudice, they should have to have consequences like anyone else. No one should have the right to put another group of people at risk. If that's what religions think means religious liberty then that is sad imo. that isn't what the forefathers intended with the first amendment unless i hear "kill" or "beat up" people should have the right to speak what they want and practice whatever religion they want...

I am convinced that a lot of wrong and evil has been done in the name of religeon but I am not so sure that God approves of it. His thoughts are not our thoughts and His ways are not our ways. We just cannot speak and act for God in everything, no matter what a Constitution states. That is why constitutions are amended from time to time in order to make adjustments in a changing world and developments in societies. The founding fathers who wrote the Constitution lived in a completely different era from the world of today, and very often people forget that fact.

So you think it's fine what Westboro church is doing? After all they aren't saying kill or beat up gays. That is their religious freedom right? Really? When pastors preach they have to be cognizant of the possibilities their words may inspire in their people. There is always going to be someone that feels justified in going that 'extra mile' for God and justify it because the pastor said it was an abomination and a sin. i dont like the westboro church at all but they have a right to say what they want, now when they say "god loves dead soliders" that is close to saying kill to me i probably wouldn't allow that....

i dont know faune...is it a coincidence or the hand of God? he has done similar in the past... and then there is this verse... Rev_6:8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth. the "beasts" of the earth could very well be virus/illness cause i haven't see any major attacks by dogs and cats or deer and horses...

I would say there should be some kind of consequences for people who spread hate. Some religious beliefs are hateful and when taken as literally as Westboro does, they do cause harm, psychological pain and suffering etc. I feel so bad for the families that have just lost their loved one and some church has the right to come along and picket the funeral and gravesite with something that says 'god loves dead soldiers'. So when does religious rights to free speech cross over the line and do harm? It is certainly something most religions don't even think about when they spout things like 'homosexuality is an abomination to the Lord'. Snow ~ I'm with you on that one, especially when the remarks are filled with hatred and bigotry and serves no purpose other than character assassination. Did you check out the earlier videos I posted of three pastors in North Carolina who really demonstrated homophobia in their rhetoric and said some pretty unkind things about gays. It makes you wonder about where's the love of Jesus when they carry on in this way? Also, they sound a bit fanatical, too!

This is true partaker. Also, if churches are teaching that certain members of society are abominations, there needs to be some kind of repercussion for that kind of slander and ill will. By teaching this they are endangering the lives of the gay community at the very worst and they are slandering at the very least. Why shouldn't there be repercussions for teaching this kind of hate and prejudice? Why is it that religions always feel justified in teaching such things and not have to be held accountable? I don't understand why it's okay for Muslims to teach hate against anyone that isn't Muslim either. Just because they are a religion and no one is allowed to touch anything that is a religious belief, no matter how barbaric and dated it is? Snow & Partaker ~ I agree that people in pulpit positions need to be more sensitive in these areas, especially with discrimination laws in place. I'm sure they can find plenty of topics to discuss beside gay liberation today? I'm reminded of a preacher in North Carolina, Pastor Ron Baity, making headlines a few days ago for his homophobic remarks in the pulpit. Then, below this recent case are two more NC pastors who went way over the top in their hateful remarks about gays in the past.

W.Tell ~ I have to admit that this video sounds like Big Brother or The Company is exerting too much involvement in curtailing the messages from the pulpit regarding homosexual. Ironically, Houston also has it first openly gay female mayor and it would appear she's acting like a woman scorned? However, if those five (5) pastors in Houston having their sermons and e-mails with members scrutinized, than perhaps they have been pretty verbal on homosexuality, regardless of the laws in effect protecting the right of gays. The three pastors I referenced earlier were really homophobic in their sermons and over the top in their hateful rhetoric regarding gays. This type of inciting members in the congregation against gays would undoubtedly be considered over the top and could result in violence towards the same. Also, these churches receive tax free exclusions from the government, but must abide by the government requirements regarding the same.
In addition to these other men, I'm also reminded of Ted Haggard who also protested strongly against gays, but we learned later was actually practicing the same with a male prostitute. Honestly, the rhetoric of that North Carolina pastor, Sean Harris, reminded me of Ted Haggard, too!

Here's something I read today that caught my attention, which could be related to these homophobic pastors in North Carolina and other states making a platform of this subject within the churches. I feel the above reference video entitled, "Homophobics are Gay ~ Study" might be hitting upon a point worthy of consideration in many of these cases, IMHO?
