Its almost that time again. Workers exiting towns and working their butts off @ convention. I have fond memories mostly funny ones.
We were little minxes we would go to preps with Pops one sat before hand. It was a fun day. My cousins and I were great mates. We didn't mind the dirty jobs. We'd scrub those wooden shelves they put in the tents for holding candles. I never did like the hair holders. Ewww... We'd also fill sack mattress' s with hay while we peeked and whispered about the handsome lads. Sewing the closure with humunguss needles. Lost a needle once. Loved lighting candles in the tents. They had a huge meat safe that was positioned under a tree to catch the breeze. It was a busy time. Mum would sewing our clothes for weeks. There was a huge trunk she used. Pops adored my mum he would sneak in to the tent early while he cooked the porridge to see if she needed anything and check on his little chicks. He wasn't really allowed to because it was ladies quarters! When it came to Mum nothing stopped him. When we went to preps he made sure our big tent was close to the dining shed. Pops was always good fun. Hed whisper conspiritaly and say 'quick Ive got to go. Someone might see me.' And wink do a jig slappin his ankles together.

Haha..he created them course he took pleasure.
We would line up in front of the dining shed. Women on one side men on the other. They had a list of chores we couldnt wait to do the right thing and offer our services for the tables and dishes. Pantry was more boring. No lads..lol Then run back to Mum and tell her we were going to help the workers. She was so proud. Most were kind the odd one was like a twisted lemon. Sadly she never got our humour and enthusiasm for life.

A jar that was placed in every tent on the female side for the women to place any loose hair removed from their hairbrush. This system was started after some of the cows supposedly became ill after convention finished by eating hair that had been discarded on to the ground. This is the background to Pukekohe Convention (Auckland, New Zealand) but I don't know if it is done elsewhere.

Thanks for sharing that bubbles. Sounds as though you had great fun and good memories. I used to like convention until I was about 12 then not so much. Before that though all the older girls wanted to do my hair so that was fun to have all that attention. Some of the hairdos I ended up with lol... All the whispering with friends after the lights went out was fun too, especially when the elderly ladies started knocking on the bunks wooden beams. Never did preps though. Always waited tables during convention though. Loved the stew and hash. The kids would come back to the tent with funny stories Eg: the night watchman tripping over the tent rope an old lady snoring through the canvas.

I hope that this yrs conventions produce wise conclusions on how the eldership need to address CSA. Setting guidelines and legal responsiblities as leaders. I hope the workers have the boldness to speak the truth in love of what cannot be tolerated and the courage for any offenders to stand up publicly and acknowledge the wrongs committed. The axe needs to be laid at the root. When that happens then rebuilding the broken down walls can begin. It will take strong leaders to bring change and fresh hope.

Attention workers. I had some ideas for you for convention. Workshops in the arvo. You could do music workshops for all potential worship leaders. Train people with a desire to take biblestudy during week How to minister. How to evangelise. How to discover your gifting. HOw to pray for the sick. How to increase your faith. childrens workshops to inspire them.you could set up a flying fox and have games nights. Youth..the next generation. Send them to all the workshops and see their zeal. THEY have energy and passion with good leaders they do great things. JMI

I always have a laugh about when I was 17 or so and this young guy came to convention with a new car that was pretty out there. Naturally, he was proud of it. A bunch of guys decided to find an empty tent at the edge of the tent area and hide the car in the tent for the convention. He was kind of beside himself but in a dilemma as he knew the blokes had done something with it....but it was convention so you don't go running to the cops about your professing mates and you don't go tell the workers. He got his car back in pristine condition at the end of convention. Ross, do you know what my mother, God rest her, would have said about that, wagging a finger? The devil always finds work for idle hands to do. Lol

Guess I am either very pessimistic or very cynical.
I knew when I left the "TRUTH," as we called it, I was totally aware that I could talk until I was "blue in the face" & I would not make a dent in anyone even believing me, let alone that I could change anything inside the "TRUTH."

Did God teach the workers to deny their beginnings in Ireland in the late 1890's?
They did begin then you know, -whether you accept that it is true or not.
History doesn't much care whether we believe something.
History justs goes on happening without much concern for what any of us want to believe is true.
