As many of the two by two friends have little instruction in public health and food management I am not suprised that every year at conventions I get a bad case of diarrhea.
I do not understand why they feel the have the proper training to cater to a 4 day event involving a large number of people.... I at least hope they wash their hands after going to the toilet... Though some conventions do not have showers.
Can you imagine a person with 4 days worth of dirt on them cooking up your grub. YECK....

I understand that the workers responsible for food preparation at Scottish conventions were sent on a food hygiene course a couple of years ago. Gained a recognised qualification in food hygiene. Is that not done elsewhere?

diarrhea doesn't mean you have eatten bad food... it can mean you are getting are getting a different diet than you are use to and your body does't know how to handle it properly. Maybe you should clean yourself out and eat right.

...sounds to me like diareha did get cleaned out......maybe it was the split pea soup !
I believe that most conventions do have some sort of food safe regulations to follow- otherwise they would have been shut down by now.

Well, there is another possible alternative for the source of your diarhea--you could just be full of @#%t.

I would have to say that the food is one of the most fond memories I have about attending convention. Every once in a while you would hear about a convention where everyone got food poisoning, but it was the rare exception, not the rule. Yes, the good home cooked food was only second in fond memories to the naturally beautiful nubile young women. You never had to wonder what they would look like after they washed their faces!

You probably get diarrea because the food is different from your usual fare. Additionally, I think that spending 4 days in a row sitting on benches and then spending the rest of the day sitting and talking to friends is a little hard on the body. 4 days of convention isn't exactly what doctors would recommend for good health. It's been years since I have been to a few days of convention but I'm sure that everyone there figures out a way to shower daily. I don't think 2x2's are any less hygenic than the rest of us.

I remember the days when I had to go 4 days without a shower and I was a teen, it was dirty. I always always got super CONSTIPATED at convention. It was every meal at Milltown was a slice of white bread with butter, boiled potatoes and gravy, and a cookie and maybe some peas/carrots and that was the meal. Mostly carbs...carbs..carbs. Sometimes they would make a Taco Salad, but it was mostly kidney beans, cheese, and salad dressing with a few pieces of lettuce, it wasn't good, and sometimes some old lady would volunteer canned peaches or other fruits. So the only fruit you got was canned...usually gross, one year it had bottulism so they had to throw it all out. Those were back in the days when my mom would make cookies and pies for the convention. I dont know if people bring the food anymore from their own kitchens...its hard to say if its safe to eat. I have not eaten at convention for 10 yrs, but I was always constipated for four days and by Sunday was miserable.

to each his own... that is sad... some people just don't know how to get up and move around and keep things in good working order.. your body doesn't take a vacation just because you took 4 days and acted out of character

You all crack me up!
2 things could be going on -
#1. convention gives your digestive tract a rest from big macs, gorditas, sub sandwiches, cheese pizzas so perhaps the colon is simply doing its job during convention - getting rid of FAST FOOD CRAP.
or, #2 (no pun intended) although diahrrea seems to be the opposite of constipation, they actually come from the same spot: a colon in distress.
I felt like I had 'butt putty' at convention time. No poo-ing for me! Lack of fiber was the culprit: white bread (we NEVER got it at home), lots of spuds, cheese (excellent butt putty, by the way), dessert at every meal, no fresh fruit or veggies, the list goes on and on.
My advice to any who still attend convention? Bring along the metamucil.

I was forced to many, many conventions because I was B&R and I never had any digestive problems there. For those of you concerned that the people cooking convention food are "dirty," have you looked at the high school kids behind the kitchen counter at your local fast food restaurant?
Don't forget that those kids grew up watching shows like Jackkass and many of them think it's "high humor" to spit in the food or even pee in it.
I think convention food might be the least of your worries. ;D

Sunday afternoon, after convention, I had the privilege of being at the afterparty of snacks and treats. [The group was an elite group of all skinny people] All conversation quickly turned to routine gossip-----the topic of discussion was fat women. "Can you believe all of the fat women that were at convention this year?" "Oh my, so and so is as big as a barn." "They looked like a bunch of barrels walking around." "Wow, so and so looked like an alligator wrestler, boy oh boy, sure would hate to meet up with her!" And so on and so on-----I sure am glad they got that all hashed out." whew.

I think it is interesting to note...
If your not at convention eating good old convention stew......
You must be out engorging your self with all the fast food imaginable.... Living the *SUPERSIZE ME* Life.... Next you will say I should go and sue convention grounds for not giving me my usual fair and making me suffer from diarrhea.....
Well for your information.... I don't really eat fast food.... or even red meat that often. Though I do love a nice steak... It is so expensive that is often only on special occasions that I will partake in such a delicious delicacy.
For breakfast I usually eat cereal, Granola, fruit, and yogurt. For Lunch.... usually consists of some ryvita crackers, turkey or chicken, cheese, and a delicious soup.... For dinner usually chicken or fish, a potato on the side, and then some delicious steam veggies... MOUTH IS SO WATERING.... And eat fruit as a snake through out the day..... Fresh or dried.... And in the morning before all that I have one cup of coffee, a women's multi vitamin, a kelp vitamin (for the iodine... I have a problem with my thyroid), and an omega three fatty acid supplement.
Is it that most of the world don't run around engorging them selfs with fat food crap like americans do

Food Nazi. Thats what you are. Your post reeked of pride. Look at me - I'm so good and wise in my food choices. You've made food your religion.

I love convention food. I don't know how many conventions I've been to. 100? Never been sick from the food. I *do* sometimes get sick when I'm nervous and being around people sometimes makes me nervous. Pepto bismol. If you think the food is making you sick, why eat it? You are (I assume) an adult with a car. Can't you just go to town for lunch or dinner? Maybe pick up some groceries and eat in your car, tent or camper? As far as I've seen, nobody is holding a gun to anyone's head and force feeding them. I think you owe it to yourself to do what makes YOU feel good so you can get the most for yourself out of the meetings. JMO.

I pretty much loved the food at Texas conventions, but when we moved and visited other conventions, I found the food... well, not to my taste. Sure, I'm probably just picky, but I'm also a southerner- which means my tastes are different from those who, say, live in Canada (which is probably why I didn't enjoy the food at Strathoy- that and I was sick and pregnant with my 2nd child).
In areas that have restaurants nearby, I just stopped in at least once a day and to get something to nourish and get me through the day. It wasn't a huge deal. If I couldn't get out for some reason, I'd make myself a sandwich- as bread and jam was always available.

I looked forward to convention food, for the most part. Other than the stew each noon (which I loved, btw), it was a challenge to guess what the next meal would consist of.
I remember being ill only 1 time. Dreadful flu-like symptoms that spread like the plague. It's easy to assume it was food poisoning but what if it was actually a very contagious 'bug' going around & food wasn't to blame?

Just because some one decided to eat healthy does not mean they are a food Nazi.... Excess fat, carbs, and salt are not good for you. (Convention stew and Potatoes). There are a lot of healthy foods which are absolutely delicious. Because you choose to eat healthy doesn't mean you deny yourself things you like, it just means you like things which are healthy. Anyway, fast food burgers make your skin oily, make your tummy bloated, and just make you feel ill. On the other hand the protein in tomatoes helps protect your skin from UV light. And they are delicious. And can be cooked in so many wonderful ways. Take Bruschetta for instance.... Some delicious Italian bread with some tomato on top sprinkled with olive oil and vinegar.... with melted cheese... YUMMY!!!!!!

food nazi..you're absolutely right...but, not practical for convention either... In addition, while healthy food is VERY much worth the money it costs...as I try to buy healthier recently, I realize it costs quite a bit more. Taste, quantity, price are what it's about for convention....thus the more fattening food. Lastly..if you eat healthy the rest of the year...4 days isn't gonna totally clog your arteries up or anything, and yeah..as was mentioned..you can always bring your own food. M.
