I stumbled across this over Christmas on the website of the Irish broadcaster RTE and reckon it is worth devoting 40 minutes of one’s life to listen to. While it relates specifically to priests in the Catholic Church in Ireland, there is an obvious and hauntingly familiar read across to anyone who has left the 2x2 belief system and even more so it one happened to have been a worker. In particular it has relevance to any who have departed entirely from belief in the Christian faith. It refers to such things as explicit faith, naivety and innocence at seventeen …. it talks about the faith he had at the time as now being daft ….. it refers to elaborate exercises of self-deception….and of being so bored. I can certainly relate to a lot of this during my 2x2 momentary lapse of reason. Even if you can’t spare the whole 40 minutes, it is worth listening to the last 5 minutes which touch on issues such as loss of belief and regret. Ex workers will likely relate even more than I do to some of this. Even if you haven’t left the 2x2’s it’s still worth a listen from the perspective of changing position of the Catholic Church in Ireland and the fact that it’s a human story and one which is both touching and entertaining. I enjoyed listening to this podcast...thanks for sharing it, Matt10. As you predicted, I found obvious and hauntingly familiar parallels with my own experience....naive, youthful zeal, and a heartfelt and earnest quest that now I can see could only lead to the slow erosion and eventual loss of my faith.
I resonate with the almost wistful observation made by one of the former priests....(something like) "I'm not a strident unbeliever....but 'feck' it, there's nothing out there. It's a real pity, but there just isn't." I remember the profound sense of loss that swept through me at the moment I first knew this.
And at the same time, all three of the men who lost their faith also express an overall satisfaction with where they are today.....which I would say about my situation as well.
Another part of the podcast that struck me was when one of the men tells how after he made public his decision to leave the priesthood, several of the older priests confided their regret that they had not left while they were young and leaving was still a viable option for them. I do wonder about some of the middle-aged and older brother and sister workers in this regard.
(edit note: thanks to Matt10 for providing me with the correct the spelling of the word "feck")

The journey into disillusionment by these Catholic priests and finally total unbelief in God and religion in general was fascinating to listen to and ponder.
