I have almost finished reading a trilogy of book by Philip Pullman. The first book is called the Golden Compass/Northern Lights (depending on which country you live in). The books are about the soul, good and evil, heaven and hell. And the battle that rages between the two. It also goes into great depth about the evil and deception of the church. Of course it is a science fiction book which was written for children and therefore much of it is very metaphorical. The second book is called "The Subtle Knife" The third book is called "The Amber Spy Glass" In any matter. The books are brilliant. Even if they are written for children. They are brilliantly imaginiative and once you start reading you can hardly put them down. I would recommend reading them. Also, The first book is being made into a feature length motion picture which will be released at the end of this year. I can hardly wait. www.goldencompassmovie.com/BRILLIANT

Your description reminds me of several other "good VS evil" books, in regards to God, Satan, etc... The Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony. Very good series, although it does bog down a bit by book 4. Book 6 picks right up with the role of the "devil". Book seven is good too, dealing with the role of "God". Books 1 was by far my favorite, exploring the role of "Death". Memnoch The Devil by Anne Rice. Excellent exploration of the story of "Satan". Some may say it is purely fiction, and goes against everything the bible/god says. BUT, how do we really know it isn't true? It offers a wonderful and a very plausible other side of the bible and Satan's history. I love reading other sides of the bible myths. andy

I think myths & legends are fascinating. For instance those found in The Bible. It just annoys me when folks mistake myth for fact...and especially when they imply that I must believe in the same mythology as them...or go to hell.
I loved the PBS series on mythology....Can't remember title, but it's hosted by Bill Moyers and his guest is Master Mythologian Joseph Campbell. Myths from all religions and cultures tell us a lot about ourselves. I've seen the videos many times.
