Put this here and not on the main board just because of my own comfort-- just read "Grounds to Believe" and have another one coming in the mail. She is a christian writer that was raised in the 2x2. I have really enjoyed the book and in reading knowing where alot of the material came from. If you read this Shelly --great job. I will be reading more link to her site if anyone is interested www.shelleybates.com/index.htmlBrenda

Hi Brenda,
I've read the first two books she's written, and am looking to find the third one.
It was unbelievable how accurately she portrayed all the little nuances that I can remember from my professing days. I enjoyed both of them very much.

She's real, I know her. Shelley is her given first name (or at least the name she has used for decades), but Bates is not her maiden name. Very nice lady, lives in Los Gatos, CA, originally a Canadian.
I haven't had a chance to read any of her books yet. BJ, once you have read some of them, how about posting your impressions and your favourite? That's the one I'll read.

I have read Grounds to Believe, A Pocketful of Pearls and A Sounding Brass by Shelley Bates. I thoroughly enjoyed them... and I agree, she is a good writer. She has a new book out (don't have the title in front of me) that I could not find at Barnes and Nobles. I did buy 2 of her books there, the other from Amazon.
I would recommend her books..... Cali

so far I have read Grounds to Believe-- the other two I have ordered and am waiting for.
It was interesting how she described the legalistic religious group in the book as going to "gatherings" and being called the "elect"--
some of the stuff was right out of the 2x2's and other stuff was different-

I just started A Sounding Brass--I noticed when I order them online they called Grounds to Believe Book One of the Elect Series-- Sounding Brass is book 2 and Pocketfull of Pearls is the 3rd one-- dont know that it really matters-- but I have noticed already in The Sounding Brass-- they have mentioned the couple from the first book.

My favorite book so far was "A Sounding Brass". For me it offered insight not only into a f&w's type group, but also into the spiritual vulnerabilities we can all face.

Her latest book is "Over Her Head" and isn't part of the trilogy of the other three.
We were roommates for a couple of years in San Jose and she was hard at work getting her english degree then. It's great to see her doing what she worked so hard to accomplish!
Her trilogy books have been a huge hit in the Christian community and she's won an award for one of them. Can't remember off hand which one now but think it was Grounds to Believe.
If you haven't read the trilogy they are well worth reading.

If you go onto ebay you can get it there fairly cheap. Amazon might also have it as well. I have had good luck ordering this way as long as I pay attention to the sellers feedback score.
I think I got it from my library.
Good luck, Sherlene

I usually compare prices at EBAY, HALF.COM (EBAY subsidiary), Overstock.com, Amazon.com and the below website (which are smaller market booksellers). www.bookfinder.com/Lute1812
