I'm sure there are some friends and workers who do go in Christian book stores, but for fourteen years and I did not just make this up, I wouldn't because we were highly encouraged not too. O.K. if your buying a bible or a reference book. But not to read anything that is written by another preacher!!!
It has only been a few short months since I last attended a meeting so, I do know about the experiences I had and with those I went to meeting with.
As a matter of fact my husband who still attends got in the car with the elder who was listening to The Purpose Driven Life. The elder asked my husband if he had read it. My husband has not but me and my brother and law have. He told my husband that many of the friends would not apporve but that this was one of the best books he had ever listened to an highly recommended it to anyone, although he would not offer this to many of the friends.
True story, not fiction.
Anyway, everyones experience is different. If one of the friends feels that they would be drawn away from God reading material that wasn't the bible, then we need to accept that everyone is in a different place on their journey. We all need to stop picking on each other professing in the meetings or not. Jesus went to all, and was seen with those of a lesser station, in the view of others. He is our example, teacher, savior, friend. If you truly have his gifts, then no one will be able to take them away.
I have enjoyed many things that I would never have considered reading before this past year. It is so wonderful to know there are christians in every denomination, and that one day we will all come together as the bride of christ. Yes, many with buns also:)

isn't it iinteresting that the 2x2's are ok with secular stuff but not Christain stuff--- John Piper, Chuck Swindall, Charles Stanley all are very bible based speakers and authors. Ray Stedman has awesome bible based writings. Full of Truth!!!

maybe the reason you don't think they are Christain is because you've never read their books--if you did , you would see that they are. They don't wear buns, go to meetings, talk about workers and special meetings. You will find that they believe that Jesus is the Way ,the Truth and the Life!! reply #32---you mentioned that you hadn't noticed that they were Christain in reply #30 so that is why I suggested you read ---you won't notice they are Christain by there dress or how they wear their hair---it is a heart condition. I'm so glad God looks at the heart.

I've actually read several things... DaVinci Code.. etc. And I have several different study bibles and interpretations... I've even showed them to the workers asking what they think about them (mostly, I haven't received any negative feedback).
I also enjoy reading Christian self-help books, including books on improving yourself, your marriage, etc.

didn't Christ give teachers to the church? shouldn't we be good stewards of His gifts, some of which are pastor-teachers who are given to equip the body? (Eph 4)

whoever found the Davinci Code in a Christain bookstore---stay away from that bookstore--this is not a Christain book!
