Ukraine will need some rock solid security guarantees after a settlement is reached. Article 5 protection from NATO members would be appropriate. Article 5 protection from NATO members is the only thing Putin would respect. Ukraine shouldn't settle for anything less. It obviously isn't an objection to making NATO members who border Russia - Finland proves that. My sense was that NATO, aside from seeing Ukraine as extremely corrupt, correctly understood that a significant portion of Eastern Ukraine was loyal to Russia. And they were hesitant to make a Russian sympathizer a NATO member. Maybe that changes after the peace settlement and the areas which have been fighting since 2014 to be independent from Ukraine are formally broken away? But my hunch is that even if Trump were to want NATO membership for what will remain Ukraine, the other members will be reluctant. |

Well, he's probably Hitler. The bar for being one of the most evil humans in history has dipped quite a bit lately. Not at all. Trump still has to prove himself. We'll see if he can make it. I have a suggestion for him in case he doesn't think of it himself. Well, maybe he'll fail to kill over 6 million people on a maniacal conquest of North America and let us all down. I'd be curious to hear which ethnic group you'd suggest that Trump exterminate. I can't think of any that I hate that much. |

Unfortunately, I don't know the actual plan of action. All we have right now are speculations, most involving "impossible ends of the world" "analysis" by left leaning news sources. If I was to speculate, I'd speculate he's going to do what he usually does - start unrealistic and grandiose, and negotiate down to get what he wants. He wants the criminals, drug runners and human traffickers who have slipped in though the effectively open border gone. He's already said they'll prioritize criminals. My sense is that they'll make a big deal about deporting the baddies first, and that will appease his voters (who have nothing against peaceful immigrants). He can simultaneously make it nearly impossible to cross illegally. Then it'll be business as normal. I might be wrong, but that would follow his pattern of 2016, when he promised mass deportations of 11 million people, and didn't do it. That's how he negotiates. They'll take the early win, and then focus on other issues. The American people won't care about the peaceful hard working illegal immigrants who are helping the country prosper of they see actual problems being solved. What is lost on the left, who spend their time obsessing over identity politics, is that the vast majority of Americans aren't in fact racist. That's all contingent on the health of the democracy -- which isn't all that healthy right now. I imagine Bernie Sanders, twice now a victim of the Democrats "saving democracy by circumventing democracy" would agree wholeheartedly! |

On the other hand, Trump has long been crowing about who it is that are poisoning the blood of America. He didn't name them specifically, but he used plenty of descriptions that, if one checked carefully, encompasses a large number of ethnicities and no mention of exceptions. I am aware of this - I have close relatives of three different ethnicities that he has spoken menacingly about. Of course, if he behaves in the Hitler tradition, his "deportation" numbers will vastly exceed the popular identification. Hitler only exterminated 6 million JEWS, the other 5 million he did away with were of the rest of his undesirable and hated ethnicities and persuasions. Also, Rulers in that tradition actually have exceptions for who can be spared - - like people who are valuable for entertainment, research, and menial slave roles can be spared if they behave the way he wants them to. |
