www.cnn.com/2022/02/18/politics/joe-biden-russia-ukraine/index.htmlI think the administration (as well as others, but Biden's been most vocal) is actually being very intelligent in how they're handling Russia/Ukraine. They know the ball is in Russian hands. The US and NATO cannot really prevent an invasion. By public prognostications about what they think Putin will do, they take away the credibility of Putin claiming Ukrainian instigation. All in all, Biden is playing it as well as anyone in his position could I think.

www.nytimes.com/live/2022/02/19/world/ukraine-russia-newsA frustrated Zelensky - Ukraine is learning that it is actually better off as part of Russia, than to persist as a democracy on the hopes that weak and two-faced European nations will one day let it join NATO. Why do they want NATO membership at this point? They are being shown yet again just how little they mean to the west.

Biden campaigning from his basement: "Putin knows that if Biden is president, his days of tyranny and trying to intimidate those in the United States and eastern Europe are over. I'm gonna stand up to him. He's a bully, just like the president. And I know he doesn't want me to be president, but tell you what, when I'm president, things are gonna change.... Send a message to Putin: Chip in a dollar, 5 dollars, 10 dollars!" Well, Biden is right. Trump was a bully. You know what didn't happen under Trump, but happened under BOTH democrat presidents before and after him? A Russian invasion and land grab at the expense of Ukraine. I think we sent a message to Putin all right. If Trump manages to stay out of jail (I give it 50/50), he'll inherit Joe's legacy - Russian expansion at the cost of international democracy, and hyper-inflation and energy dependence. The best thing that could happen is Trump being convicted of something to keep him out of politics, the GOP doing the right thing and leaving him, and developing a normal GOP ticket (Romney would win - he predicted Russia was the greatest international threat and was mocked by President/candidate Obama.... even CNN had to admit Romney was right!! www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/its-time-to-admit-it-mitt-romney-was-right-about-russia/ar-AAUajFA?ocid=uxbndlbing ) Here's another great irony - we were energy independent in for the first time in 2019. Now the US gets 100,000 barrels of oil per day from Russia. Just watching the utter incompetence of our leaders.... I still think Biden's prognostication about Russian movements and motives were wise. Probably the only wise thing - in retrospect... What a world. Obama/Biden - Russia annexes Crimea. Biden/Harris - Russia invades Ukraine. And Trump is the Russian stooge. It was as ridiculous during his campaign as it is ridiculous now. But... Orange man bad, after all!

Putin might have cancer. This is wild speculation on my part. EDIT: apparently this was speculated in 2020 that he had a tumor removed. I was just trying to think why Putin has suddenly seemed different, more impulsive and less filtered.

www.theguardian.com/world/video/2022/feb/22/speak-plainly-putin-tense-exchange-spy-chief-ukraine-videoFOX ran some nonsense about Putin and his spy chief disagreeing, and how it shows disharmony in the Kremlin. My take - staged and leaked. The audience for it was China. Putin wanted to show the Chinese that they weren't about disputed areas joining the Russian Federation, but about recognizing the sovereignty of the breakaway regions. Because China issued a statement saying it respects the sovereignty of nations, and Russia and China have a new friendship. My thoughts - using this tmb thread as a place to think. Input welcome.
