Born 10/23/1928 in Sioux County, Nebraska to Charles “Thomas” and Leona “Lone” Frances McKnight, Wilma lived on the ranch homesteaded by her grandparents from birth until she married the love of her life, Bernard James Bone on June 20, 1950. She attended a one-room schoolhouse, with her three older siblings, Ruth (Herb) Finney, Kenneth (Velma) McKnight, and John “JC” (Marie) McKnight. A few years later her younger sister Wanda (Don) Laws joined the family. Wilma completed her education through 8th grade in that one-room schoolhouse. Two disappointments were that a storm prevented her from attending her 8th grade graduation and the remote location of the homestead prevented her from completing a high school education.
Wilma’s love for Jesus is evidenced in her well-worn, highlighted Bible, which provided her the comfort and solace she needed after the passing of her husband of 54 years in December of 2004. She spent untold hours reading her Bible and praying for family and friends, who often received the love notes that she loved to write. One of her greatest joys was the opportunity to travel to Egypt on a mission trip and visit Israel in 2009 at the age of eighty-one where she helped to train some Darfur refugee women to hand sew as a means to support themselves. She served the less fortunate by crocheting hats, fingerless gloves, and headbands for the homeless (handed out by Chico Street Pastors), infant hats and blankets for Mountain Pregnancy Center, sweaters for orphaned infants, and beaded bracelets for PLUR Life Ministries. After hearing that grandmas were vital to the Street Pastor Teams when ministering to the homeless and party-goers on the streets of Chico from 9pm-2am, she joined a team and hit the streets once a month to serve the Chico community and help make it a safer place.
She inherited a love for animals from her mother, often sharing stories of their dogs Sport and Skippy, her horse Trixie, the cat Topsy, the orphaned cottontails, and even a jack rabbit nursed back to life. After she was married, they even had a pet skunk for a while. Petting a purring cat was a sweet pleasure for her and she delighted in the antics of the many dogs.
Wilma loved her family, serving them with her prayers, her letters and her hands over the years. She was known for her cinnamon rolls, sour cream raisin pie, embroidery work (quilts, pillows, wall hangings), cross stitch, crocheting, and sewing. She was often found doing our laundry and cleaning the kitchen, the shop and anything else that needed order. Often her “straightening up” resulted in items being organized beyond our ability to find them, but it all looked better! She preferred yardwork to housework, but her home was always in order! She made quilts for all of her great-grandchildren, including the one born May 30th, a couple weeks after the fall that eventually took her from us.
After she married and left Sioux County, she lived in Oregon (Vale, Scio), California (Buttonwillow, Wasco, Alturas, Gilroy, Bakersfield, Big Bear City, Hemet, Chico, Twin Peaks), Washington (Starbuck, Renton), Nevada (Reno).
She is survived by her older brother John “JC” McKnight and younger sister Wanda Laws; her five children Clair (Dana) Bone, Dellis Bone, Warren Bone, Colina (Karl) Drew, Bernitta (David) Woodward; her fourteen grandchildren Charles Langdon, Leah (Aaron) Keith, Alana Langdon, Weston Bone, Cheyanna Bone, Rebecca Bone, Benton (Rachel) Drew, Gyles (Stacey) Drew, Tyrel (Allison) Drew, Tristan (Gloria) Drew, Dustin (Sara) Woodward, Chérie (Jeremy) Isles, Caitlin (Andrew) Phelps, Andrea (Devin) Read; seventeen great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Bernard and Wilma and four (of their five) children and all their children left meetings in the mid 1990s after the Gilroy, California Convention fiasco occurred on their property.
