Love and truth go together inseparable. 1 John 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth. 2 John 1:3 Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. like i said just a few second ago i already said the same thing up post you are too late and a dollar short... Like speak said, you are showing a "loving spirit" NOT ! You are so full of your own self righteousness that you cannot even see how you come across to others @wally. Why would anyone want to be a Christian, if you are an example of one ?

Nice words, but is that all there is to it? How about the life that goes with them. How about you first, elder? I don't see you show it in your life for the last two years. You talks too much about love but show so little action, words on here. It's so pathetic really.
And you do nathan ?

What would be some examples , if any , of Jesus teachings of truth , at the expense of love ? Alvin
The Truth is Love, when the truth is rejected, its at the expense of love. "For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth" (Proverbs 3:12). Jesus corrected the Pharisees many times because he cared enough to let them know the truth, but they rejected him and generally responded with hate. That to me is an example of speaking the truth to people who can't handle the truth.

If I dig deep enough, I find that fear is the biggest impediment to love. And does it not say that "Perfect love will cast out fear"? I hadn't made that connection between the statement "Perfect love will cast out fear" and the idea the fear is the biggest impediment to love. It makes sense. To take it a step further, to what degree do you suppose hatred is an expression of fear? Precisely. That is (imo) the manifestation of fear. And from what I can tell, we fear the unknown. Empathy then, is the natural result of becoming familiar with others, which can only happen if we do not fear them. It seems there are two ways that love casts out fear. We must understand that from a 'God' perspective, the unknown person has innate value. In essence, the value of the unknown other transcends the highest possible value we could possibly assign to them ourselves. We then have to realize that that transcendent love is extended to us as well, and our innate value is greater than any natural harm that an unknown person may cause us. In essence, we must have this perspective of a transcendent value we place on others and their wellbeing. And we must love ourselves. Then, we will be able to overcome the fear of unknown harm and allow ourselves to become familiar (family) with others. And in a world full of conspiracy, where we have been trained to suspect the worst of our neighbor, this becomes all the more valuable.

What would be some examples , if any , of Jesus teachings of truth , at the expense of love ? Alvin there are actually several but this one always pops up in my mind... Mat 23:13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. Mat 23:14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Mat 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves. the down unders and a few others on this board don't like verses like this though because it upsets the apple cart of love... here he pretty much beat's down a number of sinners with the Truth and not in a "love fest" way... the Baptist and Paul were similar some of the time... i say you either teach ALL of the bible or none...sticking to only the happy parts won't necessarily help anyone... Actually I like those verses. They help me to understand Jesus' attitude towards self-righteous religious bible-bashers.

The following comes to mind at this time as well...
Luke 18:9 Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else:
10 “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector.
11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector!
12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’
13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’
14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

OK. I didn't realize that fixit lived "down under." In paradise It's starting to look like it. I know the world is tilted off its axis when the Aussies and Kiwis are making down-under seem like the land of enlightened, civil and rational discourse! My ol US of A is screwed up right now! I'd join y'all down under for a spell if it were practical!

And it now occurs to me - as a KC Chiefs Football fan, perhaps I don't hate Tom Brady so much as fear him deep down. Not sure there's enough perfect love to overcome that though, no matter how favored he is with seemingly every major diety.

so you are saying that Jesus was saying love at the expense of truth? interesting take and not biblical by any measure at the same time...elder It will take a bit of work to bring the Bible into line with Wally's expectations... Matthew 5:43 “You have heard the law that says, ‘Love your neighbor’ and hate your enemy. 44 But I say, love your enemies!(but not at the expense of truth). Pray for those who persecute you! 45 In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. 46 If you love only those who love you, what reward is there for that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. 47 If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. 48 But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect. If you decide to use the gun that you take to meeting, you'll need to decide on the fly whether the enemy you're about to kill is the kind of enemy you should love, or the kind of enemy you should kill because of truth. Wally has patiently explained many times that carrying a handgun to meeting is something that the Lord has laid on his heart to do. Who are you to question this? The loving thing to do would be offer your brother in Christ a nice set of tritium night sights as a gift.

I was just sayin' he will need to hone his discernment skills so he can decide on the fly whether the enemy he's about to kill is a love- trumps-truth enemy or a truth- trumps-love enemy. Everything else in America is being de- trumped these days so I'm not sure how that will affect the shoot-your-enemy-on-the-way-to-meeting decision making.

I'm sure review005 would say the same thing about your thankfulness for his wisdom and instruction. And he is a worker! I think Jesus covered the decision-making process in Luke 12: "do not worry about how you will defend yourselves or what you will say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time". I have to assume Wally will be getting real time guidance as to who to shoot Jesus may have been paraphrasing Exodus 4 where God gave assurance to Moses that he would be given the words and decision making. Moses... Now he did some killing for God to put it mildly!

Enjoyed in our gospel meeting last night about the good Samaritan and the love expressed by his action, it doesn't say that he spoke a lot of empty words but the expression of love through his actions.
