i guess that term is now verboten except if you are a socialist like biden or hirono or a plethora of other ner-do-wells...even one dictionary changed overnight to say it was now a derogatory term... www.newsweek.com/amy-coney-barrett-preference-definition-1539088 Wally, -perhaps - it be might be easier for you to understand why it it would be of "offensive" to you if someone were to ask you, "Wally, which sex partner would you prefer -a female or a male?"
Your link:
www.newsweek.com/amy-coney-barrett-preference-definition-1539088
On Merriam-Webster's online dictionary, a slew of meanings are listed under the noun "preference," ~including "the act of preferring: ~the state of being preferred"; ~"the power or opportunity of choosing"; ~"one that is preferred"; ~"the act, fact, or principle of giving advantages to some over others"; ~priority in the right to demand and receive satisfaction of an obligation" and lastly, "offensive: ORIENTATION sense."
Take a quick scroll down the page and you'll find the dictionary's explanation regarding the "offensive" usage of the word. For that sense, Merriam-Webster notes, "used to refer to sexual orientation is widely considered offensive in its implied suggestion that a person can choose who they are sexually or romantically attracted to."
Now Wally, -would you feel that it was "offensive" for someone to ask you the question, "which sex partner would you prefer to have sex with; -a female or a male?" -would you feel "offended?"
...and if you would be offended, -would not that also put you in the same company of being a "socialist like Biden or Hirono?"

stating i have a "sexual preference" for women is not quite the same as questioning my preference....

stating i have a "sexual preference" for women is not quite the same as questioning my preference.... You aren't getting the point, wally.
The offence comes from people like yourself who say that gay people are NOT born with that sexual orientation but that they "choose" to be that way.
PS: Not that it should make any difference whether it is "born" that way or "choose" that way. Everyone has the right to love whoever they want!

Use of the term, "sexual preference" is at worst, a political dog whistle suggesting a right-wing homophobic attitude. At best, it indicates that the speaker is uninformed and out of touch.
It's a bit like using the term, "colored" to refer to a person of color.

The insulting part of this situation is that she used the term to suggest that individuals "choose" their sexual orientation. It's religious pseudo-science that promotes that silliness.

I subscribe to Dr. Kinsey's theory that sexuality is not black and white in terms of hetero/homsexuality, but rather that individuals lie somewhere on a scale of 0 (fully heterosexual) to 6 (fully homosexual).
Take, for example, Wally. He has stated that he prefers women, leaving open the possibility that he hasn't ruled out men entirely. That might put him to the left on the scale (sorry, leftie) but not all the way to 0. I'm far to the right in preferring men, but I wouldn't say I'm a six.
So in that sense, I'm fine with saying that my sexual preference is for men. I do believe that I did not choose that preference, but as dmmichgood wrote, so what if I DID choose it? And it is a fact that I have CHOSEN to love a man.
On the flip side, it's often the case that when people use the term "sexual preference" they also have the opinion that gays CHOOSE to be gay, and if they CHOOSE to be gay, they can also CHOOSE to be heterosexual, and if they DO NOT CHOOSE to be heterosexual, they will go to hell -- and that's why some people feel the term "sexual preference" is offensive.
I don't find it offensive myself, although there was a time when I did. At this point in my life, I don't give a flying flip whether people think I chose it or not .
It is quite fun, though, to respond "So you believe sexual orientation is a choice. Please tell me about the time when you decided to be heterosexual."

I have a friend who's husband is now her wife. She sent me a picture of them together and said, "Just us two lesbians."
To my mind, she isn't a lesbian, as she has never been sexually attracted to women. I don't know anything about their sex life. I don't ask, although she said she is open to anything I want to know. I don't want to know. Not my business, as my sex life is not anyone's business. Some things are private. Anyway...
It was hard at first and my friend did consider divorce. She stayed in the marriage as she says she loves her wife for the wonderful person she is and that hasn't changed. Love is love.

They might have, but now that they know I'm not entirely a 6 on the Kinsey scale, my phone has been ringing off the hook.

How do you factor in Wally's longing to be a wife to Jesus for all eternity? The preaching about us being the bride of Christ was honestly quite a turnoff for me growing up. But these professing guys wax poetic in meetings about being the blushing bride for their heavenly hubby.

If it were not for Wally's "logical, no-nonsense, well thought though" posts on here, -we might not be aware of what is going on in the magical world of what some people like himself want to believe and therefore we might not think it necessary to present what is really happening in the world of reality.
Thanks Wally!

Everything in the Bible that you don't like is just a metaphor He doesn't like reading about eternal torture with molten sulfur and a lake of fire, so it is all just a metaphor. You don't like hearing about how Jesus is planning on changing your gender pronouns, so it must just be a metaphor.
