So if kneeling is such a universal sign of deference in the US, why do so many people's heads explode when athletes silently take a knee during the national anthem?

So if kneeling is such a universal sign of deference in the US, why do so many people's heads explode when athletes silently take a knee during the national anthem? A lot of people's heads "explode" because they don't want to acknowledge that they are racist! Much like some of our resident racists here on TMB.
NFL players kneel during the national anthem as a way to protest police brutality and racial inequality in the United States.
The movement was started by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick during the 2016 preseason. Kaepernick initially sat during the anthem when he first started the protest, but switched to kneeling after speaking with former Army Green Beret and NFL long snapper Nate Boyer. Boyer wrote an open letter to Kaepernick after learning of his protest, and the two agreed that kneeling would be a way to present Kaepernick's message without disrespecting the armed forces or the flag.

The two people in the video wally posted went on at length about how kneeling is an act of deference and reverence. I'm trying to figure out what the problem is with athletes kneeling during the national anthem. Do people think the athletes who kneel are inappropriately treating the flag like it's a king?

You are expressing your religious belief; in the United States, you are free to 'not kneel to mankind or causes' as you wish. There is no language in the law or in the Constitution that requires people to stand and not kneel or sit during the playing of the national anthem.

So? Tradition does not a constitution make.

So? Tradition does not a constitution make. traditions can be quite powerful... Of course. That's why they're so problematic at times.

Like it or not, there is also a long history of protest during the playing of the national anthem.
