A lot of it was filmed around here where I live. Many of the locals were used as extras. Other locations were Matamata in the Waikato, Mt Sunday in the Rangitata, (awesome fishing spot) and around Qtown and Wanaka. I prefer the books and Tolkiens writings are not just limited to these three. One of my favourites is Farmer Giles of Ham.

One of my favourites is Farmer Giles of Ham. yes very beautiful scenery... i've read the hobbit, the lord of the rings, farmer giles, the silmarillion but i did not know how many other books he had written: www.tolkiensociety.org/author/books-by-tolkien/did not realize a relative had picked up the pen either....

I have read somewhere that Tolkien's books were actually just, (if that's the right word) modern english translations of very old Welsh fables.

I have read somewhere that Tolkien's books were actually just, (if that's the right word) modern english translations of very old Welsh fables. yes thats probably true he was also influenced by celtic, slavic, norse and greek mythology plus throw in some christianity too plus WWI and possibly WWII...
