Hi Dan,Sorry to hear about the situation with your employee. Hope your sharing here helped. Sounds like you'll do okay. Yes it can hurt if someone you counted on, enjoyed, and had faith in, quits with a seemingly short sighted reason.
I don't know if it'll be any help, but I had a number of employees over the years, and I always found it useful to keep in mind that they or I could be dead tomorrow, and this old world would go on anyway, and get by without me, or them. I tried to respect that I had the right to fire them on the spot and kick them off the premises, and they had the right, at any time, to say screw me, and leave.
Imo there is an opportunity for someone else. You indicate that this is not so easy, and that's no doubt true. But that's the way it is.
One of the surprises of my lifetime experience, is that training someone never (and I actually do mean Never) turned out to be a loss. It seems they almost always spoke well of me because of it. In fact (and businesses differ of course) the bottom line was I over all got more business as a result, because I was remembered, and sometimes recommended, and often consulted in future years.
Anyway... Sometimes it helps in the moment to sing the song "Got along without you before I met you, gonna get along without you now." And Bon voyage, to whomever.
Thanks, its nice to hear from someone who understands business. Its more than one employee I'm losing, but I just focused on the one here. I'm trying to hire replacements now, but training requires 6 weeks, so its never easy. The customers are coming back, but what bothers me is that my help isn't because the state is paying them to stay away from work. Anyhow, another 16 hour day for me tomorrow, and that's tough for an older guy . But I seem to have time to screw around on a message board, so I reckon I still have time & energy to spare . The only thing I'm looking forward to is that when these people eventually call to say they're ready to return to work, I'll have the pleasure of dropping the other shoe.
