Dan Henry
I have been thinking about what Jesus taught us concerning building a tower. Luke 14.27-29. Why would a man want to build a tower? Because he wants to be able to get up higher where he can see further & can know what is coming from a distance & be ready when it comes. We hear, “No one saw COVID-19 coming". Now people are craving any news they can hear about the virus, to know what is coming next, what is to be expected, what they can do to protect themselves, how they can live through it, what is happening in faraway countries. The “tower” has become very important. Now we can understand why the man wanted to build the tower. Jesus was teaching something very important. And that is to sit down & think. He said if a man began to build a tower & then didn’t have enough money to finish it, others would laugh at him. He was teaching us to be quiet thinking people about the future & to count the cost.
Our tower is higher than just to see the end of this pandemic & life after the dark cloud of this worldwide plague has gone over. What will the world be like? What will the economy be like? What will school be like? Will I have a job? Will I live? Our tower helps us to see LIFE beyond THIS LIFE. And when we really think about it, we come to this conclusion; whatever it costs me to be His disciple, it is worth it.
His next parable was about a king with 10,000 soldiers in a war with a king with 20,000 soldiers. What does he do? He sits down & thinks. He can’t win. So through an ambassador he makes peace with the greater king. Jesus is teaching us to think seriously about the future. There is a war that none of us will ever win - - we all must die. So let’s make peace! When I think of the fear & anxiety eating away at the world today, I feel so grateful. I’ve already made peace! Jesus taught me how. I trust the Lord will safely keep us through this dark time. We know we are in His loving hands. Our souls can rest.
Next, He teaches us about salt having lost its taste. It would be worthless, so just throw it away. If we lose this spirit of the quiet, deep thinking disciple who is convicted to follow Jesus no matter what it costs, then we’ve lost the “taste”. He taught us we must worship in Spirit & in Truth. He merits all my heart, all my love, all my life, all I have. That is the way Jesus loved His Father. Our Heavenly Father knows the taste of real salt. He tasted that in Abel, in Abraham, in Joseph, in Esther, in Daniel & many others. And the purest, truest “taste” come from His own Son’s love for Him.
To serve Him any other way would just be worthless & meaningless as salt without its taste. Cain had an altar & an offering upon it, but didn’t have that “true savor”. I am thankful that even these days when we cannot have meetings, it does not mean that morning, noon & night the Lord cannot savor as the “salt of the earth” - - those who truly love Him. I am thinking of all of our friends in our field & at home & I am praying you will have a good quiet time with our Lord tomorrow even if you are alone.
