I don't know what year it was, but Uncle Norm became very ill and became paralyzed and unable to conmunicate. (He laboured in India from 1953-2000.)
He was staying in the home of some of our friends and they cared for him well. As he lay in his bed, unable to move, he began to pray and wonder why he should be like this, so useless and helpless. Human reasoning said it didn't make sense.
One day, he'd had some visitors come to cheer him up, but none of them noticed his arm had slipped off the bed and he was in agony. As his eyes sought out someone to help him, the only one who had noticed was a low caste "untouchable" servant girl who was not allowed to even speak to her betters, let alone touch a white man. Finally everyone filed out of the room, leaving Uncle in agony. Then, with deep apologises the servant girl stepped forward and moved his arm to a more comfortable position then quietly faded away.
That servant took an extreme risk. She could have been put to death for touching him. At best, she would have lost her job if her mistress ever found out.
In time Uncle Norman recovered. They never found out what was wrong with him, but he came to realise that without that experience he would never have been able to even speak to that servant because of her caste.
Long story short, he was able to persuade her employers to allow her to listen to the gospel, she professed and then, against all societal boundaries she could sit down in sweet fellowship with people who were so far above her on the social scale.
