not the best of ideas...but before we start saying "it's no longer just about their religious rights anymore" i think we should stop and think for a little bit on how that may be used in the future to shut down religion all together...

It is a strange situation Snow, Churches are sacrosanct and are able to do their own thing, and not conform to what applies to the general population. I guess it is because of old laws that protect separation between Church and State.
A wall of separation between church and state. This is a very strong statement, very clear in meaning. First of all, it means that the government cannot make laws that favor one religion over any other, because it cannot make laws related to the establishment of a religion or the free expression of religious beliefs.
These laws are obviously out of date, and not suitable for our times. But Governments are too frightened to go near it.
There are businesses in Australia that are to remain closed. What businesses must close.
The Prime Minister announced on Sunday that some businesses would have to close by midday on Monday because people were gathering in some of them against social-distancing guidelines.
These include:
Pubs Clubs Cinemas Casinos Nightclubs Indoor places of worship Gyms Indoor sporting venues
It is interesting that some businesses in Sydney who did not close as per the law, were fined $5000 and employees $1000. I bet that if a Church has a service on Sunday, they won't receive the same penalty.

Wally if Churches are doing the right thing and considering the rights of others, then they have nothing to worry about. Hats off to 2x2's they have closed down, the responsible thing to do. Pass on our thanks and appreciation Wally.

For too long Churches have put the fear of God into everybody, including Governments. This has meant that Churches have been a law unto themselves. I do think that in a modern society there is need for change. I was surprised that the Australian Government set up a CSA Royal Commission. And some of the recommendations made are being implemented by the Government, to change that behaviour within Churches. This is right and proper and the way things should be. If Churches do the wrong thing, that causes physical harm to others, they should be brought to account.

The quack who conducts prayer sessions for Trump's cabinet has claimed that the COVID-19 is God's punishment for homosexuals.

Not hostility Wally, just plain common sense. It is an unfortunate situation that some of God's people are so heavenly minded, they are of no earthly use.

The quack who conducts prayer sessions for Trump's cabinet has claimed that the COVID-19 is God's punishment for homosexuals. there are no good answers to that. i would like to think that God ended with Christ the punishment of the whole for the sins of the few....everyone is responsible for their own actions...BUT it does seem according to scripture that near the end he punishes the whole world for its deeds...

I agree with that. But I don't think that's where it's at. I think it's a genuine need to keep people safe. But I do understand what you mean.

But sometimes things need to be done for the good of all and this is one of those times imo. All also includes those that are being pulled into these churches and then getting the virus because they listened. We have had all non essential business closed here for about a week and half already. No St. Paddy's day pub crawls for example.

Which is exactly the reason why we need to make people physical distance. We don't have time for them to finally realize This Is Not a Test.

Here is yet another example of a church staying open and endangering not only it's members but others because when they get this, and they will, they will be taking up ventilators that could have been used on someone who is a needed front line worker. I wonder if it will come to a place that if you haven't done what you're told is the thing to do that you will not be a priority when the health system is overwhelmed. And we're not far off that point at the moment. There is no excuse in this day and age with technology to have on line churches to have to meet face to face. Everyone else is doing this where ever possible so they should also. www.huffingtonpost.ca/entry/coronavirus-church_n_5e7a6f71c5b6e051e8dcd517?ri18n=true&ncid=engmodushpmg00000003

No wonder some people think they can ignore the social distancing ban and all that goes with it. When you still have the ancient superstition that disease is a spiritual manifestation, then the "righteous" take refuge in their religiosity.

Just dropped some groceries off to couple late 70’s at the doorway. I do their garden normally and the next 2 absentee owners, on lake front. Watered the garden at one while there, completely on my own. The only people I saw were next door , obviously 2 women workers sitting on deck having lunch. I thought what a lovely spot for them to self isolate,( well we have to keep to our own bubble in N.Z.) looking out on the lake from an up-market property. I guess the spare batches and holiday homes would be good for this purpose. Good they can be safe.

One of the outcomes in the USA and other backward countries is that there will be less religious people. No doubt the surviving bible bangers will blame the atheists instead of their own stupidity.
