Proving Jesus as a historical person suffers due to a Lack of unequivocal first century testimony, outside of the New Testament texts.
There is only a single source (a much contested source) found in a single paragraph of “Testimonium Flavianum” by Josephus, J.A. 18.63-64. And even among those who accept that Josephus had firsthand knowledge of the events most agree interpolation is involved.
Thus, in total, one is left with the majority view reflecting that Jesus existed, but was less significant in his own time than the gospel accounts suggest. And the minority view is that Jesus never existed as a historical person.
Anyone choosing to understand what this all means would do well to study the New Testament vs. Josephus. And in particular dig deep into the series of parallels that until recent most academics have overlooked or completely miss.
First notice that these parallels all occur with a 15 to 20-year delay in Josephus texts. This then means that events described in the New Testament in the thirties while absence in Josephus’s text depicting the thirties instead closely parallel events Josephus describes as occurring in the late 40 to the 50s. No one claims Josephus was an infallible source. However, at the same time no one would accuse him of being intellectually lazy and to continue repeatedly making such errors.
Here I leave the readers to make what they will of these facts.

Okay I see everyone is missing my argument and dragging it in a direction I had no thought of travelling. The question being are these true and significant parallels? If these are, they offer new clues to a historical Jesus. Because the timing of events in the New Testament is based on the naming of public figures and to the best of my knowledge Josephus is the most significant source to tell us when Pilate was the prefect and Caiaphas the high priest. You will have to try harder to bust my bubble. And do you think I really care if you do burst my perceived bubble? Some bubble you think mighty be important to me. My only aim herein is to discuss the facts. Facts which you all duck using a curt, short, often in the wrong direction remarks. Thus, it is hard for me to see what it is you actual contribute here. Also Wally you might want to know where you went astray. Try reading the very first sentence in your linked article: “The reliable Gospel eyewitness accounts aren’t the only ancient description of Jesus. There are also non-Christian descriptions of Jesus from the late 1st to 5th Century” I very plainly told the reader to focus on 30 – 50 CE. Anything after that is most likely regurgitating Josephus. Why would anyone care what some later hack had to say that wasn't there and was using the few statements from those that were to suit their own ends?

No discomfort at all. If you chose to not address the facts and drag out a dead herring each time someone offers you enlightenment that remains your problem. Also one should notice that besides Josephus telling us the timing of when Pilate was the perfect and Caiaphas the high priest he also aligns the date of the 15th year of Tiberius’ reign which is when John the Baptist started preaching this then points us to the crucifixion being between late 20ties – mid 30ties. However, this cause’s a problem with New Testament time lines.

When it comes to Jesus purely from a historical perspective, Ehrman has you covered.

I wonder – it doesn't seem to me that intelchips bothered watching the video I posted by a guy that seems to have the credentials to provide verifiable evidence on his own, and who details that evidence in clearly understandable terms – somewhat making the opening post of this thread look super confusing from the first word and growing more confusing as it progresses – already to the point that its point is unintelligible to an average reader, a mere 6 posts into this thread. So for me, I'll let someone else try to figure out just what the opening post is saying, let alone 'asking.' My impression is that intelchips is just sowing seeds of doubt to impress any readers who have neither his 'credentials,' (whatever those might be) or have even taken a glance at the abundance of evidence that supports the Biblical account – like a biased teacher peddling biased 'goodies' upon unsuspecting kiddies – 'soak em up kiddies, soak em up.' But do have a watch of the video presented by a much clearer speaker because then you might place such doubts where such doubts belong. The opening post resembles to me the 'wise' elder of a 2x2 Meeting putting one over the heads of the illiterates in his Meeting – making himself LOOK like he has something even worth saying to them at all. But clearly THIS is plain false, "Proving Jesus as a historical person suffers due to a Lack of unequivocal first century testimony, outside of the New Testament texts." What’s this video you refer to? And what’s with the bitterness?

I dunno bout any "bitterness" stuff, but since it is posted sooooooooooooooo far above this post that 2x2/visitors might not find it, here 'tis again; The Real Jesus: Paul Maier presents new evidence from history and archeology at Iowa State www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAN3kQHTKWIUse your words. If that video doesn't document any first hand witness that wrote within 20 years of the event I haven't time to waste on it.

Awwwww I nowwwwww - and that's probably why I get the impression that intelchips hasn't even taken a look to see it "..that video doesn't document any first hand witness that wrote within 20 years of the event." And in my opinion if intelchips won't take a look at it, the video is WELL worth 2x2/visitors to be sure to watch it very carefully indeed. I had a quick look at Paul Maier‘s credentials, and while he may be a professor of ancient history, why would you see him more trust worthy then biblical academics?

And in my opinion if intelchips won't take a look at it, the video is WELL worth 2x2/visitors to be sure to watch it very carefully indeed. First, let me say that I really do not care one way or the other whether Jesus of the New Testament existed. If definitive evidence of his existence is unearthed, I will be happy to read about it! I took a look at the video. In the segments I watched, Maier told stories about archaeological evidence of the existence of some of the people (e.g. Pontius Pilot) and places (e.g. Caesarea) referenced in the Gospels. Later, Meier described how a boat was dug up in the area and was carbon dated to the 1st century. Perhaps I simply chose poorly, but I heard no direct evidence of the existence of Jesus. If there is anything more compelling presented by Maier, please, do tell. Otherwise, I'm going to assume the rest of the 2-hour video continues the hand-waving apologetics.

"I had a quick look at Paul Maier‘s credentials......" -- but avoided looking at the video? "...biblical academics..." - WHAT are "biblical academics?" -- specially if Paul Maier is not one of em. Well I’m talking of the people who hold PhD degrees in the bible. Biblical scholars, experts of the bible... I wouldn’t call Paul Maier an expert on the bible, he’s an expert of ancient history, going by his credentials. Biblical scholars are both experts on the bible and the history of the ancient near east..

"Well I’m talking of the people who hold PhD degrees in the bible." Ah huh - I was left wondering how anyone would divide Paul Maier up so as to discard him as a "Biblical academic" -- now we see that changed off to "Biblical scholars" only - who "hold PhD" degrees in the bible - I had one o those tucked in my Bible once, but it dropped out an got lost. And we are 'treated to an 'example' no doubt - somewhere in our own imaginations. Round and round the mulberry bush, picking mulberries one at a time, like a good 2x2 that has no evident Bible literacy or "Biblical academic" degree to play this kind of tiddly winks with - ho hum. Please, don't mind me and any 2x2/visitors if we just ignore the efforts the poster has made and no doubt will continue making up to try to create something other than what is clearly seen within the video - all of it. I watched your video. What a bunch of unobtainable straw man arguments just as I thought it would be. How did I know that without watching? Because I know the sources of what is actually related to the facts dealing with the subject. None of which were mentioned in your video. I know Maier has served as Third Vice President of the Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod. And also he is the son of Walter A. Maier (1893–1950), founder and long time speaker of The Lutheran Hour. And from the Video he seems to know just about as much about archaeology as the everyday folks who reads this forum. He offered no sources related to this subject. Now then if you think me a fraud then call me out. If you think me just under educated say so and show me with facts where I need to study further. And if you can do neither why take up your hammer?

Anyway, who knows for sure which Jesus they were talking about. Interestingly, most people don't even know that in the company of the apostles both Jesus and Judas had the same name. They were translated differently into modern languages so people wouldn't get them confused. It was not an uncommon name in Bible times.

Quite a list wally.
All the sources came convenient together.
While I and many others have already years ago investigated many of those from their original sources, Josephus, -being one.
My copy of the Works of Josephus of over 900 pgs. is a bit shabby & rather old but still quite readable.

Someone said an authentication factor used is the factor of embarrassment or shame. It seems that in Josephus’ works there was something to do with that angle. I guess I’ll have to go to the library to see if I can find it. I’d stupidly gave my Josephus book away. I didn’t have it all , I think is why.

~~ Who do you believe Bart the man or the MAN himself Christ/Jesus God? I would love for Bart to read this Dead Sea article below spoken by Christ/Jesus himself and tell us if these words are TRUE from the man/God Himself! ~~ Jesus The Great " I AM " God (From The Dead Sea Scrolls) I, the Lord God of creation, who was and who is and who shall always be the one true God, the mind, the very center of the Universe, speaks to your own heart. The words that I have spoken to my prophets Moses and others were that he should recognize that the great “I Am.” filled his being with the power and the authority to open his mouth in my name and to proclaim his words as a living words that I placed deeply within him. I have in times past spoken through the mouths of my prophets and then through the mouths of my apostles. Now the times and seasons are approaching, as are the reasons, when my words shall again be spoken by my obedient prophets and apostles. Their words shall be my words and their deeds that shall be my deeds, because I have spoken this thing before the World was ever formed. Those words that I now speak shall be hidden for a season and then shall be revealed in the last times I shall cause the Earth to quake and the sunlight, which represents the new dawning, shall shine brightly upon those who are appointed to carry my words from the darkness of the caves to the bright sunlight of my new revelation to all mankind ... and mankind shall read and they shall study those words and they shall find that they are the words that will cause an awakening to occur in the minds of mankind. It has been said in times past that I am in the wind and I am in the fire and I am into the waters. These words are not true. The truth of this matter is that I am the wind. I am the fire. I am the water. I am in everything and in everything that exists. When you touch the mountain, you touch me. When you are touching the water, you are touching me. When you touch the fire, you are touching me. I am the Lord of the Universe and there is not one place that I am not. I am not in the flowers, the plants, the fruit of the land, but I am the flowers. I am the plants. I am the fruit of the land. Mankind will climb into the heavens. I am not in the heavenly, but I am the heavenly. When I created man from the dust of the Earth, I was the dust of the Earth and I was and am the breath of life that causes mankind to live.
Say not that the Lord your God is in the heavens or on the Earth. I am the heavens and I am the Earth. Now you have received the true revelation of my word, which was spoken to you in times past. The word said that I am everywhere present. I am omnipresent. I am not part of myself, but rather I am the whole of the Universe. Wherever you look, wherever you come or go, whatever you do or say, I am there in the midst of you because I am not only in, but rather I am you! It shall be written in the future that man is the universe. I say to you that I do not dwell in the universe of mankind, but I am that Universe of Mankind, and there is no separation whatsoever. These words that I have spoken to you at this time and in this place are that you might believe the truth of the message that as my Father is one with me so is the Spirit one with me. Now I am likewise in you and you are in me and that means I am one and you are with me. Have I not spoken these words in the past that I am in you and you are in me? Jesus said, " That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me." Let this testimony be with you forever and forever, as we together traverse the streets of that sojourn from dawn to night. Be at peace and look deeply within yourself and you will find me.Again I have spoken the words in the past that you are indeed gods. I am your God. This revelation is of utmost importance and you must believe the whole truth as I have spoken it in your pure hearing. I say to you, allow the vibrations of your spirit, your inner ear, be unstopped and hear what the Spirit says to you at this hour. I am the center of your universe, because I am the whole of your universe. Know this, for this is the word of the living God, the Creator of all things which are. In time and seasons to come this word will be revealed to you and you shall behold the brightness of this truth, and you shall say, “This is the light for which I have long awaited. This is the revelation that will hold and maintain me through every experience of life.” Beware, there are those who would destroy this truth, but they shall not be able to destroy this truth because the truth abides in you and you abide in the truth. I have spoken in times past. And I have said that the truth shall cause many to walk in freedom, out of darkness and satanic bondage. And they shall have no further influence or rule over you. I have spoken these truths by the words of my lips and these words are true. Accept them and you shall live in peace, in joy and in victory over all things. Amen! "...biblical academics..." - WHAT are "biblical academics?" -- specially if Paul Maier is not one of em. to be fair, I doubt you watched the lecture series I linked on evolutionary theory, so that you could communicate coherently on the topic. I don't fault you per se, but it's unlikely any of us have the spare time to continually digest YouTube videos not about cats.
