It's quite a surprise that I'm writing this verse," 'Cause I should have by now, had a ride in a hearse, But believe it or not, I am still above ground Not knowing how long I'll be hanging around.
I start each day with a hit of caffeine To help me pretend that I'm still what I've been, But I now take all day to do half a days work And by then I have found out, where the pains lurk!
I once thought "retiring" was something to seek, But sometimes I long for the old 5 day week, Each day's now the same -the weekends have gone, And the only "weekends"are the legs I stand on!
I'm as busy as ever with things in the shed, Mainly sorting junk -most of which is now "dead" But I'm a good bloke -I've gathered a lot And you'd be surprised, at what I've still got.
So apart from the grizzles and groans that age brings I'm keeping amused reminiscing on things And I treat every day as it comes and it goes But how long can this last, nobody knows.

G'day Redback, At the farm of Dad's step Mum,in Dean's Marsh,at her funeral,1950, James Funerals had a near new Buick Hearse. Two old locals were looking at it,one saying to the other"Buick ain't it"? "Yer,love to have a ride in it". The thought of an 11 year old kid??. "Won't be long, you will get a chance soon". Magpie

Yes Magpie I remember the Buick, everybody was dying to have a ride in it. Got to know Garnet James, I used to be an Honorary on the Ambulance. Garnet's Funeral Home was opposite the Ambulance station and after he had a severe heart attack, he would ring to get us to do the lifting. More than 60 years ago, perhaps not some of my best memories.

You definitely think about different things than you once did when younger. I recently got a new kitten. My old fur pal lived a long life and I just realized that if my new kitten lives as long as my old cat did I'll be 81 when he dies. Now that is a sobering thought. I wonder who will outlive who!!! Sure puts life in perspective doesn't it! ha!

You are right Snow you do get a different thinking. It is not a fatalistic approach, but more realistic not worrying, but as you say thinking about the pets in your care. You become aware that they will have a problem if you're not there. So you become hesitant to get any new ones. You start to think that you do not need a new car, the one you have will do. Not so much that you will leave tomorrow, more that soon you will not be allowed to drive anymore. Even now they are bringing in new laws for mobility scooters, where they will have to be registered, you will need a drivers licence, and wear a safety helmet. So the problems you have are different, and the only approach is one day at a time. Just be glad for the day and give praise for that.

I know there are some who will not like the words of this song, but it brought great comfort to my Brother as he faced his final days. I always enjoy it, and I know it brings comfort to a lot of people, and that is a good thing. youtu.be/3nG2cE6Kctg

Thank you for the music link. Really enjoyed it. Statler Brothers also have a YouTube rendition of it, and a couple of others. Donāt care what āageā will be envolved, just rather enjoy the thought of existing without pain and agony from injury and sickness, which can never be robbed by another just trying to steal my eagerly anticipation expectation away from me.

Just one more.
Another birthday, older and older again And my joints are all "sticky" arthritis pain My eyesight is fuzzy, my memory's poor, And I don't work as hard as before.
I once arose very early, for the garden, ..."silly cow" My body still makes me, but for the little house now Then back to the "cot" to sleep a bit more Just havn't the urge to work as before.
My left knee is wrecked, my right hip is wonky So I get around the place like a hobbled up donkey! I can still get around but my "ground speed" is poor 'Cause I can't move as fast as I used to before.
I'm not a bad worker - but have no strength "on tap" Go well until lunch time - then need time for a "nap" Then I spring up eager - but this I know I can't work the long runs, as long ago.
My doctor is puzzled ... just why I'm still alive, But beer, port and peanuts can help you survive, Or maybe it's my Wife, who cooks with a flair, And one things for sure, we both love the fresh air.

Thank you, sir! You appear to be my identical twin!
When people ask ask me how I am, I reply, ānot bad for a fella with one foot on a banana peel, and the other foot in an open grave!ā

Thanks for that Magpie, a great song. You are right not any green grass here, haven't had to mow lawns for the last 12 months. Backyard is starting to look like the "Simpson Desert". Only allowed to use hose for 15 minutes in the evening.Trees and shrubs are dying. Fish are dying in the rivers. If and when rain does come, recovery will take a long time. Magpie you and I get our OBE this year, that is going to be awesome. No it is not the big gong "Order of the British Empire" a lesser one "Over Bloody Eighty". Hang in there Magpie, I will send it to you, wear it with pride.

Aww, it aināt so much a matter of how close I stand to the hole, but how close another pushes me in my wheelchair to it! (Glad I have a very loving wife!) Veterans Affairs Hospital in Portland Oregon Neurologists in Portland gave me a favorable report on brain functions last week. But not so cardiologists, who declare my CHF is growing much worse, adding to the neuropathy in my legs.
So, if ya aināt got that problem you can be thankful for that, even as I, seeing so many much worse off than I, with each visit for more medical care. They also relate much of my leg distress is also due to some old back injury...now I wonder what that could have been? Another trip to my personal MD tomorrow P.M.

I agree Dennis a bit dangerous if you are in a wheelchair. My Wife tells me if I end up in a wheelchair, she will take me for a long walk, on a short pier.

Smile! Then perhaps you understand my 6ā3ā fluid laden 330 lbs of frustration at even being confined to a wheel chair! Constant shame and grief at my sentence needing to be pushed around, remembering when I once was 100 kg of powerful youthful strength. If a young manās glory is in his strength, then surely a older manās strength is in his wisdom. Even then, I know I have so little.

Itās hard to buy clothes when you are that tall, and you are always hitting your head on something. Car seats donāt go far enough back, sleeves are too short, and on and on. I have noticed however that for some reason short girls like us tall guys. In life I find tall people want to be shorter, and short people want to be taller. I guess that says something about human nature. Tall people do have an advantage in most sports, and they make more money, so I guess I shouldnāt complain.

Understand, sir, yet donāt believe I have ever wished I were smaller. Grin, also the pretty sex seemed to like broad shoulders. Good thing for me, cause my face has never been something to be proud of!
Sure agree regarding clothes, finally gave up and began buying big dead guys used clothes at Goodwill. Have found many clothes to fit there, I think eithe because most men are too proud to shop there. I remember how happy I was to find wool or leather overcoats there, which I never could afford new!

I'm 5'4". Just perfect. And I was never attracted to tall guys. My son is 6'1" and I have to tilt my head to look up at him. He has to lean down/tilt sideways to hold my hand. Yes. He still holds hands with his momma when walking across the parking lot at the mall. I'm wobbly at times. Haha. I like guys my own height so that I can look them straight in the eye and meet them nose to nose. Yep! I've got one.

I am short and the reason why I don't much like it is everything seems to be just out of reach.

Remembering when: I was most often called to lift or move something! But no longer! This renal problem accelerates aging weakness! Time indeed is passing Oh so quickly! Anyone else observing that too?

Anyone else observing that too? This has been the worst year of my life in terms of the aches and pains of aging. Each year's aches and pains seem to escalate. It's all downhill from here. And I'm only 62!

Poor lil fishes and other animals caught in the drought.ā Reminded me one year the drought got us. All Gram was able to raise was a few field peas and sweet potato roots. We subsisted in stringy sweet potato roots and white gravy made from powdered milk because poor milk cow went dry too without pasture to eat. Neighbor gave us half side of a small pig and with extreme care we were able to have puny hams, bacon and sausage and head cheese. Thatās the winter I learned to like head cheese.

Aww, like I tell my honey, you two are still sweet young things to me. I am very sorry, sad in fact, that you have health problems. My Katie is still without most of them, for which I thank my God constantly, and ask Him to let it continue for her! My existence would be unbearable without her. I try to make her life as bearable as possible. Believe I am getting to be a serious drain on her.
Thinking of each oneās kindnesses, very thankful for all of them. Every day I wake up still āhereā I wonder (in pain) will this be my last day? Kindest of thoughts to each one...
