@laverdad reminds me of this little fellow Tortuous Convolvulus, who took delight in stirring up trouble within the camp: (Recommend the Asterix series for an entertaining read)

These problems have been swept under the carpet. Openness and honest leads to healing. Not pretending that all things are perfect.

joanna can't talk about anything but her lovely atheism. Listen up Walker!
When we who have finally realized that religion had held us captive to a lot of unsubstantial beliefs only because we had been indoctrinated to believe it, -you have no idea what a relief that was!
Indeed to us that revelation is both lovely and precious!

Real "openness and honesty" leads people to realize that it is "religion" that is the cause to start with!

Group control extends outside of religious bounds. I remember kids having a club and pretty soon someone is controlling someone else. Lord of the Rings comes to mind also.

Lord of the flies
When a group of people depend upon each other for survival, bullies can and will emerge.

Then don't you think that it is time to grow up and stop thinking and acting like a kid?
PS: Do you really mean Lord of the Rings?

There is an element of group think in just about any and every group. When a lost eternity is involved if you don't conform, then it adds an additional element, of course.

Another problem...Those who have been excommunicated who had dedicated their homes, finances and lives to a ministry, only to be told by a phone call that basically ....'you are no longer required'.... workers who have left all...their families,careers....only to be let go with nothing .....have to find a way to support themselves .... Shattered lives.... is it worth it?

Never-the-less, -what ever group one is in they should be able to think like an adult to use a little critical thinking and not fall for every group think that comes along. That is why being skeptical is so important

It will be interesting to hear @laverdad 's reasoning
Though it may have something to do with:
Cacofonic and Dogmatix being unable to sing hymns in tune No church having a seat strong enough for Vitalstatistix The congregation being at risk of permanent injury by Obelix No respectable churchgoer being able to tolerate the stench and risk of food poisoning from Unhygenix Psychoanalytix threatening the reputation of the Almighty Counsellor Getafix replacing the need for prayers Caesar taking the spotlight from church leaders Religion being exposed by Asterix's shrewdness

Peter mousseau molested more than one girl. He pleaded guilty . There was plenty of evidence but avoid the children having to go to courts and play out everything again. The authorities were very upset when the overseers chose to babysit him. He did spend time behind bars. He most definitely mated the life of more than one little girl. Trust your gut when something is off it is off.
