Cheers Emerald! I'll not get this time. Maybe another time. I'm really intrigued by the church so maybe will attend some time although my friends and I would stick out like sore thumbs if we attended! Why so, will you be both plastered? Just a bit of Irish humour. Remember plastered could mean intoxicated or wearing a dressing for a sore thumb. "Its the way I tell um" : to quote a famous Irish comedian.

Hehe it would be a strange thing if we were plastered (intoxicated) as none of us partake in the consumption of alcohol! We are Christians from a different denomination than your church so I know for a fact we would look out of place! Not so to me my friend I would welcome you with open arms, i am an not an exclusivist.

I have no idea why partaker is talking about drunkeness at convention, but then perhaps that's his thing. A different church - you'll be wearing hats then, as we no longer do?

No no no, I have never been drunk in my whole life, but if you would stick out like a sore thumb, being plastered springs to mind.

Why would they be wearing hats? They probably would look out of place as the women don't have buns - unless in Ireland you no longer wear buns? Some churches here still wear hats. You don't really need to jump and criticise everything I post here you know.

There are a lot of Brethren people in parts of the north who look very like us. I remember being in Belfast some years ago with a friend and wondered why she didn't at least smile at the people I thought were some of ours. She told me they were Brethren, but they looked at us too, wondering if they knew us, or if we were meeting people. They probably call us cooneyites. You call it control, we'd just call it standards. Modest and unadorned.

I don't see the problem with us looking alike. It's only on the surface anyway but most are happy with it, those that aren't usually leave the meetings. Your comments could be directed at the Brethren churches too.

I am told however that most of the legalisms that have been a feature of the past are being dropped. True in some countries. Not true in others.

I don't see the problem with us looking alike. It's only on the surface anyway but most are happy with it, those that aren't usually leave the meetings. Your comments could be directed at the Brethren churches too. In a regular Brethren gathering in Australia you would definitely not see women all looking the same. However, in an Exclusive Brethren gathering the women definitely stand out - all wear a scarf or ribbon in their long hair which is a sign that they are in subjection to their husband. You wouldn't want to be like them - they are generally regarded as a cult which exercises extreme control over their members. As I said people are free to do what they want. My wife and I found it incredibly disappointing in the late 1990's when Alan Kitto (now the New South Wales Head Worker) came back from a convention tour in the USA and the highlight seemed to be that when he landed in the USA and went through customs that he immediately knew who the friends were because of the way the woman had their hair up in a bun. He could have shared spiritual help received but we only received tips on outward appearance. At the same time Ted Rozeimer, a US worker labouring in Central America came to Australian conventions and created quite a stir by requesting Australian friends not to visit his country because it would not be a good influence on the local friends. He said he had been horrified by the wedding photos that he had seen of Australian young professing folk. Again it would have been wonderful to hear a series of sermons on the gospel of grace and how we should respond to His gift of life by living lives that demonstrate the work of the Holy Spirit in us. I am told however that most of the legalisms that have been a feature of the past are being dropped. I've made enquiries (there probably aren't any Brethren where I live) and Brethren aren't thought of as a cult up North. They're seen as very religious and good-living, not unlike how people see us I suppose, but since we don't take a name, we're seen as a bit strange as there's no way to label us without nicknames.

Oh no I don't belong to a church which wear hats anymore but trust me I know some of the members of the Truth and they have a distinctive look. As you say, like the brethren. The brethren or gospel hall have very good morals and are well respected but do not like marrying outside of the church. They have some very strict rules and regulations. The exclusive brethren are different and wouldn't be as well respected. They are extremely secretive. Interesting. I'm not familiar with Brethren really of either sort, although there's a former Brethren man goes to the meetings up north. I don't think he found it hard to adjust!

If people CHOOSE to dress a certain way, no problem. If people are coerced even slightly so to dress that way, it is a problem. If convention platform sermons STRESS looking like sister workers, then there is a problem. That said, there seems to be some loosening of dress codes.
