Who loves their garden? I love flowers. The property Ive been refurbishing has 24 roses most perfumed. They are gorgeous. Some so old they have thick branches. I wouldnt have a clue the names of them. Im redesigning part of the garden to fit my needs. Im one of those gardeners that pretty much goes on strike in the heat. This will be the first garden Ive had for 12yrs.

Do you focus on flowers, bubbles, or do you grow veggies as well?

I want to grow herbs and veg in amongst the roses and other plants. Last yr I planted in pots. Everything died in the intense heat. A blackberry looks like its revived itself.

Or just vandalism?

Matisse, wally, dimmich what are your gardens like? What do you like growing? Ive planted some spuds. Its not the season but I read somewhere as long as the soil is warm when you plant (it was) then you can grow all yr round. Guess what they have shot up. The blogger also said only remove as you need.

The blogger also said only remove as you need. I don't plant as much as I use to. Having a garden was just a given for me. A rite of passing seasons. Why would one NOT plant a garden! -anyone worth their salt planted a garden!
When a drought hit & I tried to keep the garden alive, I would vow that NEXT year I was not going to bother with a garden! Then my husband would say, "Yes, seems like I heard that LAST year!"
But still the siren song beckons, -digging a row & dropping in a seed, -well three seeds actually, -because, as you know, -it's one for me, one for thee and one for whoever wants it (usually a bird.)
My son got a rototiller a few years ago, -he plants some melons & squash. I stick to peas, green beans, beets, lettuce. Just had some of our frozen green beans last night.
He plants fruit trees also. We usually have peaches to give away. They break the branches, even when we do our best to tie them up. Last year we had some really nice persimmons.
Just burned off my wild flower garden yesterday. I was tired of mowing this big patch of grass, wasting my time and gasoline, when I could seed it with roadside collected wild flower seed.
I plant at least one sunflower in the middle in case the town "object's " to my "weed" patch!

I want to plant dwarf fruit trees. Then the berries up the fence behind. Ive thought about sunflowers. We are into autumn so ive planted some parsnip but they havent appeared yet. You need a lot of room for pumpkins and melons so havent really thought how that will work. I knew to seed planting. I had always bought seedlings in the past. Thought I didnt have a green thumb then read thats not true its just trial and error. So in went the seeds carrots peas parsnip beans. Lol the carrits went walk about. I swear they were covered properly. A few peas ended up 2mtres away. One climbing up the grape another bedded in with alyssum. So I just stuck a stake in. These birds must be carrying or pooping them out. Thanks D

I just don't care for climbing trees any more. My husband did plant a great Bartlet pear tree years ago. It is way to high to pick all of them but the ones I can reach are great. I spiced some a few years ago. And I forgot, -the red raspberries and grapes. Just pruned the grapes.

i think it was just vandalism... Could be. We are lucky here. We can leave all kinds of gardening equipment in the yard, hoes, rakes, - on one ever takes them. There are times I wish someone would take some of our fruit so we didn't have to pick it to give away!

We are attempting something new this year, a strawbale garden, have elderberry and cherry trees, pears, plums and apple trees planted. Building a grape arbour next to the rasberries, strawberries (in planters) and two blue berry plants. 3 kinds of blackberries grow wild on this property. Eager to see the results of the bale garden. May 1st is garden planting target date. Always a danger of a killing frost at our elevation and latitude before then.
Had gooseberry plants for a decade but they perished along with many other plants when I was recovering in Texas last year.
Katie bought me a seltzer water maker for our pure well water, now intend to create my own flavorings, anyone with recipes?
Wild mushrooms grow nearby prolifically.
Neighbor just gave us a chicken coop, fencing and a dozen chickens! All we must do is find a way to move it all!
Goats, milk, chickens, eggs, fruit, and evergreen trees, veggies and berries. The tiny dogs pay their own way also. Latest now full grown male just under 2 lbs. More puppies on the way.
Kitchen floor nearly done! Then counters, and on to the bathroom now ready to refinish! Then the new metal roof, waiting for a promised grant...
So is the news, with best wishes, from this little "Sequoia Farm" in South West Washington State, USA! 243

Strawberries. kiwi fruit. Lemon. Orange.lime. pinapple. I planted a gooseberry bz I love gooseberry jam. Its happy with the other herbs /veg. How about a working bee and do a nice lunch.

Dmich When u burn off the burn. Do you just spread the seed or dig it in?You must be fit to be mowing at your age. Actually, I don't know, bubbles. I know farmers once burned off roadsides, as did my father, thinking it got rid of weeds. Later I heard that really didn't do any good, that the seed was already in the ground & the fire didn't reach them.
I hope I didn't ruin my wild flower garden by burning it off. It is the first time I did that. It was so full of old stalks I just did did anyway. I like to leave it intact over the winter for the birds. We shall see what happens, I'll let you know how it works.
PS: Maybe I'm fit because I mow; or maybe I mow because I am fit! OR maybe I'm just lucky!

One of the problems I had yrs ago was id pull everything out when weeding bz I didnt know what they were. This time im going to be more careful. We mulch here. Im using pea straw. It protects the plants from heat. Do you mulch or need to where you are?

Advantages offered by straw (not hay) bales are: no weeds, soaker hose watering, and raised bed gardening. For us old fogies, those seemed reasons enough to give it a try.

When you get to know your "weeds," I found that many of them are very good eating. Dandelion of course, but with some wild lettuce, and a bit of sour dock, & you have a spring dish better than spinach!

I had almost forgotten about it. If I can find some straw bales I'm gong to try it.

My gardens are raised. They have to be. Its so much easier. Oh, that sounds soothing to my already aching back!
BTW, -our apricot tree is blooming today. Problem is that if it booms too early the frost gets it & we get no fruit. We have tried all kinds of trying to heat to reduce frost damage & haven't had any luck yet.
Does anyone have a suggestions?
