It is with sorrow that I write that Doug Parker, Author of the Secret Sect book, has recently been diagnosed with cancer, with nothing more to be done but palliative care. He has been able to return home where he will stay as long as possible. A recent visitor reported that Doug is good spirits, although in much pain. Mobility is extremely decreased; he has lost the use of his right arm and cannot walk unaided. It is unknown how much longer he'll be able to remain at home in terms of medical care, and has been told he may last "a few more months". Doug and Helen are working hard on completing a revised edition of The Secret Sect. They are keeping good care of all of their historical documents and records, and have copies in a safe place. Longer term, they hope to place them in the permanent care of one of our national libraries. Parker's address: PO Box 92, Vincentia 2540 NSW Australia Click Here for ordering information for the Secret Sect book

I feel for anyone and their family who has to face this cruel disease. Doug Parker was ahead of his time and probably suffered much to reveal the true origins of the Truth to others. Doug was moved to offer for the work, I believe. Closed political and religious systems turn against those who pierce through the veiled secrecy of the group. Thank you Doug Parker, your Secret Sect book will live on forever.

I read the following from the Telling the Truth website:
Doug proposed to his parents that before he entered the work, they should all take a trip together. He proposed they visit his Father’s relatives in Ireland and Britain. His Father had not seen them since World War I. "Feeling indebted to my parents for what I had attained in life, I was prompted to give them a holiday abroad, and this is where destiny changed for the better, thank God..." (Source: A Spiritual Fraud Exposed)
Doug told John Hardie of their plans, and was told in no uncertain terms, “You CANNOT go to Ireland.” Mr. Hardie didn't mind if Doug's parents went, but Doug could NOT go. When Doug asked the reason, he was told, “Once you put your hand to the plow, you can never turn back. And you CANNOT go to Ireland.” Doug had visited these same relatives when he was on leave as a young seaman in his teens, and could not understand what was so wrong with going to visit them again. Deciding that something was amiss, Doug decided to go anyway, and he let John Hardie know of his plans. John Hardie replied that he'd have to reconsider whether or not Doug could enter the work. This only intensified Doug's feeling that something was not quite right.
John Hardie tried another route to stop Doug from going to Ireland. He warned Doug's parents, “If you don’t stop him from going to Ireland, we’ll have to take the meeting out of your home.” This came as a real shock to Mr. Parker, who was very devoted to the fellowship. Mrs. Parker almost had a nervous breakdown. She wept uncontrollably when the workers pressured her unreasonably. Doug's Father walked John Hardie and Gordon McNabb to the door and told them he did not want to see them again in his house.
The friends were not told the real reason Doug didn't go in the work. They heard that Doug wasn't willing to sacrifice his money. The Parker family was shunned. Some of their friends refused to speak to them when they met. Some crossed to the other side of the street when they saw them coming their way. They wouldn't let the Parkers get near them or inside their homes. When the Parkers arrived in Britain and called on some 2x2 friends there, they refused to see them because the workers had written letters ahead warning the friends against the Parkers ^^^^^^^^^^ This is classic spiritual bullying that has plagued the Truth since the early days.

Doug Parker was a real trail blazer in exposing the inner workings of the Truth fellowship and filling us in on its historical background. Cherie Kropp has taken up his mantle in her elaborate historical presentation of the 2x2 fellowship on TTT. We can be thankful to both for the many insights into the workings of the 2x2's down through history from its creation by William Irvine.

Doug, thank you for being a major force in exposing the "Truth". I wish I had read your book years ago!!! It sure would have saved me many years of needless grief!! As Walker1903 has pointed out, this spiritual bullying still continues today. We left the "way" a few years ago and still treated worse than murderers. It is absolutely unreal. Our current pastor had never heard of such a group as the 2x2's and is beside himself when we recall so many instances of the untruths and railroading that we experienced and now the shunning and unfounded rumors we hear about now. So glad for ones like Doug that has helped us realize the error of the Workers' Way and glad we found his book to encourage us to seek the real truth in Christ and flee the contraints and mind control experienced in trying live in the secrecy of The Truth. Agreeing with others, and wishing to thank the Parkers for the confirmation found in their book of what I had learned that others refused to mention. I did not get a copy of it to read until after I was forbidden to attend meetings, although I learned little if anything new from reading it. Just very glad for the confirmation of what others would deny.
Remembering when because of illness, I experienced an awareness never before known. Hated leaving it, and look forward to returning to it. No cold dark night for me ahead, and doubt there is for Mr. Parker either: the thankfulness for what one has learned true (in my opinion) in this life, will carry on in that awareness, adding to the reward for many...

Sorry to hear of this. Cancer is a nasty thing. What church did Doug Parker ultimately settle for?

My thoughts are with Mr. Parker and his family. Jesus will certainly be with him as he passes through the Valley. Doug's book helped me realize that the church is based on a false premise. It made me think things through logically. Thank you, Mr. Parker!

I'm grateful for all the research into the Cooneyites, and I'll keep the Parkers in my prayers.

It is with deep sadness that I learned of Doug Parker's passing. During my research Doug Parker corresponded with me and was helpful and insightful with his advice and comments. Their book, The Secret Sect was an invaluable source of information. Doug and Helen very kindly contributed a commendation for my book Two by Two the Shape of a Shapeless Movement. I express my deepest sympathy to Helen and the family circle knowing that they can rest in the comfort that Doug could say with complete assurance with the apostle Paul,'the time for my departure has come. [7] I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. [8] Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.' (2 Timothy 4:6-8 ESV)
