We at the APA call for an end to psychiatrists providing professional opinions in the media about public figures whom they have not examined, whether it be on cable news appearances, books, or in social media. Armchair psychiatry or the use of psychiatry as a political tool is the misuse of psychiatry and is unacceptable and unethical. this goes for ALL mental health professionals and would also cover any person not just a public figure... can we recognize something is wrong? sure. can we say what EXACTLY is wrong? No.... its been a more than a few times on TMB by a number of people and even by me its nothing to be engaged in.

Matisse was simply referring to Gene's saying he was going to Washington on inauguration day as "...there are many ways to fight for one's country."

its been a more than a few times on TMB by a number of people and even by me its nothing to be engaged in. - The authors credibility; Fran Ferder is a Franciscan sister and a clinical psychologist. Fr. John Heagle is chair of the Gospel Nonviolence Working Group for AUSCP (the Association of United States Catholic Priests). They are respected people within the Catholic church, and the article is well circulated. - Your comments about APA ethical policy I don't work in that field but what you write seems like a reasonable policy. But I am left with two questions; The book The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump was written by 27 alarmed mental health professionals wrote a book where they suggested Trump was demonstrating actions of sociopathic narcissism and that Trump's mental state presents a clear and present danger to our nation, and individual well-being. I know one psychiatrist who told me they agreed with this 2017 book. If it's true these 27 psychiatrists authors violated ethical standards. How can these still practice? How can these authors, one of which is a clinical psychologist, also still practice? - My main take away from this article. When I read this article written by Catholics - for Catholics, I found it was pretty damning for the 57% of white male Catholics who voted for Trump in 2020. I wondered if someone in the 2x2 would write such a letter to the friends. You wouldn't need to change too much. I find it healthy that Catholics can address this controversial issue straight on among themselves, and also for the world to watch them struggle with the question. I thought it was well written and addressed the issue head on. - Agree or disagree with the article & it's power to change minds...I agree with this article and suspect you disagree with the articles position, putting aside the ethical question. I wonder if these professional opinions will change any hearts and minds of their target Catholic audience, or non Catholics?

I can't agree... Most of us who are not such public figures do not every word we say in on record.
But Trump's life is such an open book that just about anyone who knows the basics of mental health can see through Trump.
Not only that but when someone who has so much power as the president of the US wields, not only on our lives but on the whole world; -then we should be ably to know the condition of that person's mental condition!
Think about what if the world had really known Hitler's mind before he got the power that he did.

that would be determined and handled by his doctors that actually see him in person not as they say an armchair psychiatry diagnosis...
