This was a sad thing to hear about.
MILAM COUNTY - An elderly College Station man was killed Tuesday afternoon in a two-vehicle traffic accident in Milam County, about 35 miles west of Bryan.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says 71-year-old John Robert Shockley was driving a 2003 Mercedes eastbound on Highway 79 when he drifted into the oncoming lane, near Milam County Road 346, and struck the side of an 18-wheeler just before 5 p.m.
Shockley was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

They mentioned that he "drifted", I have to wonder if he wasn't having health issues at that time....it's not uncommon esp. in his age bracket to have sudden heart issues. Of course the sort of injuries from sjuch a horrific crash would certainly be the reason for such a sudden death. I feel for the family, it's often harder to get into the reality of such events when they happen so quickly....no one is ever ready for such!

For years, we used to go to the same meeting as did John & Karen and family. I have known them from the time they moved from Indiana to Dallas area in the 1970's. John's first wife, Karen, passed away less than 2 years ago of cancer. Now their 3 daughters have lost both mother and father within 2 years time. How sad. I really feel for them.
Just 3 weeks ago, we spoke with John and his 2nd wife at Rick Olson's funeral in Texas. We also visited with his dtr and her husband. Rick (30 years old) was killed in an accident after he swerved; now the same thing happened to John.
John was the first one to get up and speak of his memories about Rick when the floor was opened to do so.
Now I'm filled with regret that we didn't talk more to him. More and more I am reminded that...
"Life at best is very brief...
We have known more than 25 people to pass away in the past 3 years.

I am just learning of John's death, some six months later, and was saddened to hear about this. I recall being in his home growing up, and just thought the world of his parents, August and Madonna. When Madonna passed away years ago, and August remarried Edelle, my family appreciated being in meetings with them. I certainly send out my condolescences to the family, and have good memories of John from many years back. In fact, I remember when he and Karen were married.

I too remember John Shockley very well and seeing him, and his parents August and Madonna, while I was growing up and attending meetings. I worked with his father, August, at INTERNATIONAL HARVESTOR in Indianapolis for some time. August was always very kind and never failed to have encouraging and kind words for me every time I saw him both at work and in the meetings, and Madonna was always so kind to me. John's character was a splitting image of both of his parents, and I thought the world of him and his whole family.
