Bert, are you not becoming a little arachnaphobic ? After all, if you are attracted to the web you should expect to encounter spiders ! ;D

E. Barry has been accounted for. I wonder if perhaps Jack Phillips has passed on since then? He was elderly a decade ago. I'd love an update on Deborah Crisp, if she's moved to another state/country, left the work, or whatever. She was a lovely lady, popular with the young folk. She'd be about in her 50s now, I think. Some of the other unaccounted for female workers were getting on in age a decade ago also. C'mon Victorians here, surely you can help out! The last we heard of Jack Phillips he was in a Nursing home.

Has there been a reason given for Deborah to have left the work? She was such a nice person.

Anyone prepared to estimate a guess at the number of people attending Conventions in Vic? I recall days when there would be 500+ at each of the Drouin Conventions and people were being encouraged to go to other Conventions.

It's emblematic only - no actual blood is spilled. "This do in remembrance of me..." was the genesis of it, but a bit more realistic than the typical Sunday AM ritual. The burning of a few pages from an old bible that needs to be discarded enhances the symbolism.

VICTORIA John Robinson, Bruce Robinson - Colac Bernard Manning, Claude Punke - Warrnambool/Portland Neil Mitchell, Ian Caves - Sale/Gippsland David Leitch, Jim Mclean - North East Melbourne Stephen Thorpe, Cam Mclean - West Melbourne Norma Ruwoldt, Yvonne Bartlett - Geelong Helen Edmunds, Shirley Bicknell - Wodonga/Wangaratta Lexie Sutton, Maree Clark - South East Melbourne Carolyn Briggs, Andrea Dent - Shepparton/Echuca/Bendigo Janette Briggs, Sally-Anne Ballan - Mildura/Swan Hill TASMANIA Ray Cruickshank, Graeme Taylor - North East Mella Somerville, Katrina Wilson - North West Coast Iris Dixon, Coral Speight - Hobart I find the pairing of Bernard Manning and Claude Punke strange. Bernard was such an interlect, Claude not so sure. I can recall the times when we were accommodated in the big top tent at Dandenong, and Claude used to chomp on raw onions to keep the germs away. Kept everybody else away. Hope Bernard doesn't have to put up with it. Bernard should be Vic overseer, after all he is a Rhodes scholar. Bob Hawke was a Rhodes scholar, look what he achieved.

I remember a story that circulated back in the 80s or 90s regarding Claude Punke, that still gives me a chuckle. I have no idea if it's true or an urban myth. Claude Punke, (pronounced "Claud Punkie") was greeted by someone who pronounced his name "Claudie Punkie". He corrected: "The 'E' is silent!", meaning the E on Claude. They replied, "Sorry Mr Punk!" If I recall correctly, he was a little stern and intimidating, and the thought of someone accidently (audaciously?) calling him Mr Punk gave many of us a giggle!

A Victorian resident who is not a TMB member gave me the following info:
I have just been reading the 2011 Victorian Workers list. Some on TMB were comparing it with the 2000 list and were not sure of what happened to certain workers and when they started and where they are now. You may post this if you want.
Deborah Crisps mother went into a nursing home last year I think and she might be resting this year.
Gladys Robinson Tess McConnell have both died
Jack Phillips is in his nineties and in a home
Andrea Dent went out into the work in 2000
Evan Jones has died.
The last female worker to go out was Narelle Milligan and I think the year was 2005 and she is no longer in the work due to not coping with it and no one has gone out since.
The Miles Sisters (Alice and Muriel) are in a retirement village.

Cherie,
Everything in your post is accurate.
Since Andrea entered the work, two young women started out in the work but didn't last long.
Glenda Crawford went into the work but only lasted five months or thereabouts. She went home at special meeting time. Narelle Milligan lasted one full year happily enough and a couple of months into her second year before she too went home.
Makes you wonder what went so horribly wrong for these two women.
