You may have seen movies or read accounts of people who have been abused and spend quite a bit of time in the shower trying to wash off the . . . whatever. Juliette is trying to wash off the cult effect. Plus, she's washing off the thought of joining the Baptists and preparing herself by cleansing extra good so her belly button won't get infected when it gets pierced. She's cleaning off the past, present, and preparing for the future. All good guesses, and pretty spot on. I actually am freezing cold all of the time in the MN winter, and take at least 1 bath a day just to get warm. I do like to be clean, though! I have noticed that I really hate wearing my hair pulled back or wearing restrictive clothing (I'm most happy with very little clothing). I'm not sure if I could put on a pair of nylons without feeling sick.

Attitude about some of the things mentioned in the original post on this thread are deeply rooted in the 2x2 mindset and don't vanish in a day .. for us at least. Some of the most obvious ugly things we managed to shake off quickly -- Some things are likely still smugging our vision. Hope we live a few more years to continue this wonderful process of development

-did you dye your hair purple and pierce your nose? I had highlights once, and not my nose, but did pierce my ears. -did you get counselling? No. But did spend copious hours on the internet at these boards and other sites -did you feel lost? not really -did your family and friends avoid you? not really - none of my friends where I lived at the time were actually going to the meetings. -did you cut your hair? Several times since then. Growing it out a little right now. -did you send your meeting clothes to a charity shop? They've been gradually leaving. I rarely wear a skirt anymore, but do keep them around for job interviews, or if I need a professional appearance. Didn't have a jean skirt - my husband HATED them! -did you smoke pot for a while (and forget to wash yourself)? No. I'm a control freak. No pot for me. And ewwww - really? -did you try to get others to leave too? No. -did you feel relief? Maybe a little. Mostly ambivalent. -did you enjoy not being at conventions and meetings? Not the meetings. I do still have fond memories of some conventions. But don't really miss them. Especially once I had children . . . -did you dump your hymn book in the attic? No. It's still around here somewhere. -did you church hop for a few years? I went to a few churches with my in-laws, but like others have said, I find structured religion too judgmental and controlling. -did you join the Baptists? nope. -did you write an exit letter for your family? nope. -did you go to the cinema? I'm not much of a movie person (to my husband's dismay!), but yes - I go to the cinema if the mood strikes. Prefer TV and books.

I "left" the meetings when I was too big for my father to force me to go anymore, around age 16 or so.
-did you dye your hair purple and pierce your nose? none of that was fashionable in the '60s -did you get counselling? Ha, no, but I sure could have used it BEFORE I quit going -did you feel lost? NO -did your family and friends avoid you? No -did you cut your hair? No, I let it grow down to my shoulders and grew a beard -did you feel relief? Like removing a 100 pound weight from my shoulders -did you enjoy not being at conventions and meetings? ABSOLUTELY -did you dump your hymn book in the attic? I refused to ever own one -did you go to the cinema?
Heh, yes, I finally screwed up enough courage to do that when I was not quite 17. It was "The Summer of Love," 1967, and one hot summer afternoon I went to a theatre and watched one of James Bond's hits, don't remember which one.
It was all pretty riveting, but I was petrified the whole time because I kept thinking one particularly mean worker (may he RIP) would come in and find me, and drag me out by my ear.

I did everything I ever wanted to do WHILE I was professing and long, long BEFORE I left meetings. Including wearing jeans most of the time (and tank tops and shorts in the summer), cutting and dyeing my hair, smoking pot (all the pot smokers I know are clean people), drinking alcohol, going to movies, etc. etc. etc. Like open mind mentioned - you don't have to exit meetings to do those types of things!
I actually did miss some things about meetings when I left -- because it was my "comfort zone" and leaving was scary. But, I never felt lost -- I knew the Holy Spirit was leading me out and God was with me. He had always been with me and I knew He would not steer me wrong.
I think what's really funny/ironic is what DID change in my life. Now I: a) listen to Christian contemporary music (gasp!) and actually go around singing it most of the time instead singing lyrics from secular songs like I used to sing (although I still like a lot of secular music) b) read my Bible with a hunger and passion for the Word of God -- I cannot get enough and I LOVE God's Word and I love Him c) pray for all people d) pray specific prayers - I even pray prayers about "natural" things, because I no longer have the gnostic idea that matter is evil and I know God cares about EVERYTHING in my life e) reach out and witness to others the gospel message d) enjoy great fellowship with many, many Christians -- including those Baptists! I see other Christians as members of the same body of Christ that I am. I LOVE talking about Scripture with other believers from all different denominations. f) see the Truth as God -- and Jesus Christ as Truth Incarnate -- and Jesus Christ as the only Way to obtain salvation. I know with absolute confidence that salvation comes by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ alone. I am saved -- not by anything that I do or wear or any "rules" I follow -- but praise God -- He saved me by His grace!! The righteousness of Jesus Christ has been imputed to me. Sinner that I am, my slate has been wiped clean, my debt of sin is paid and I am JUSTIFIED by Jesus's blood. I am JUSTIFIED by the work that was finished on the cross. Jesus took my punishment as the propitiation for my sin -- turned away God's wrath from me and made me "accepted in the Beloved". g) am a much more joyous, thankful, humble, prayerful, loving person. And, I further understand that if I start to think that being the way I am now in ANY way is of my own power -- I am being self righteous and my righteousness is, as Isaiah put it, FILTHY RAGS and it stinks to God. I am an unworthy sinner -- but I have been made new IN CHRIST -- and any good that comes from my life is directly a result of Him working in me. h) my husband and I have a new bond as believers. We pray as a family and discuss scripture together (hey,we actually read our Bibles now, instead of wondering Sunday morning where our Bible cases are! "Look in the car, honey -- I don't think we brought them in") i) read and understand the Bible. I see Jesus all the way through the Bible over and over again from the first chapter of Genesis to the last verse of Revelations. j) feel the Holy Spirit and hear Him speak to me. I wouldn't be back posting on this board if I didn't. It was quite an experience - because I didn't intend to come back and post after my first experience here, but He told me there was someone who needed to hear what I had to say. I tried to say "but I don't NEED that kind of abuse" -- and He told me that this time it wasn't about what I need.

"Look in the car, honey -- I don't think we brought them in"
LOL!!! I'm not the only one who did this, yay! I am amazed at how differently I feel about the scriptures since learning the truth about Jesus and Grace. I feel a fondness, desire and intimacy for my bible now, that I didn't have in the 20+ years I marched the march. The difference between Jesus and religion, I guess. I am not saying all professing people don't love thier bibles, I am merely stating my experience.

Wow. To the person who believes that pot smokers are dirty.....you are very misguided in this. Smoking pot does not influence a person to become unclean. I would say that anyone who washed once a fortnight has issues that run far deeper than the fact they smoke. That is a huge generalisation and one that just seemed too naive for me to ignore. Please don't be offended, just know that when you make such outlandish comments, you are bound to attract some feedback. Peace.

- Didn't have a jean skirt - my husband HATED them! Ah the jean skirt!I live in a small farming town that has (2)apostolic churchs. The one in particular has a dress code-long hair, no makeup, no pants or shorts. The younger girls have the habit of wearing long JEAN skirts! To me it was so obvious why they did it, especially at a distrance you might think they had on jean pants.
