1You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. This is a verse that I like to remember when I am tempted to look at someone else's life and think 'that person's got some real problems', or some such nonsense. I just have to remember what I was like not all that many years ago to know I have absolutely no right to judge others. The above in my own words: So... what gives me the right to tell you that you are screwing up in your life, when all you are doing is the same thing that I have done myself? It's kind of like going out to a bar and sitting there getting hammered and looking at the guy fall off his bar stool and thinking 'boy is that guy ever a loser....'. Nothing real profound to share at the moment, but this is a great passage to remind us that we WILL be judged in the same manner that we judge others. As it is further explained in: Matthew 7
Judging Others 1"Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?It is much better to encourage each other rather than to condemn each other..... I love how Paul sums of this chapter. (Rom 2:29) But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.
Mat 6:1-7(1) "Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. (2) "Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. (3) But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, (4) so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (5) "And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. (6) But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. (7) "And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
Isn't it wonderful how God can shed His grace on us and take this powerful need to be praised by others away? I know I still struggle with it, but every day He takes a little bit more of that old desire away and replaces it with a desire to praise Him and be praised by God. I'll add that the only reason God will praise us is if He sees Himself/the Holy Spirit/Christ in us! We are created to glorify Him. In Christ, Andrew

Quote of the week ;D (and God will allow us to go through experiences that do humble us until we learn the truth in what you - and Paul - are saying)

This ch. tells me we're all in it together. "It" being deep s*** (translates: big trouble ;D )
If we're a Jew we're in it really deep because we've got all that history of the law and God's dealings with our forebears. If we're some native living in an isolated part of the world, we're still without excuse (since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse ch.1).
I see in this ch. degrees of God's judgement. But also hope for those who maybe never hear a preacher and even never see a bible. The door is left open by Paul, inspired by the Spirit, that God can work in their hearts and engender faith (like maybe with Abraham... pretty effective there!)
Jesus' words in Luke 12:48 "For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more"
Sobering teaching for all of us here!

Hi all~ I apologize for taking a while to respond on this chapter...
This chapter seems to be one that is full of correction for me! Hard to write on a chapter that seems to point right at me.. heh!
It seems to be a chapter focused on judgment- on our judgment of others and how it is condemning to ourselves when we do the same things. I'm quite guilty of this and I don't even know if I realize sometimes when I'm judging others when I have done or am doing the same things.
3: So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment?
I really love this verse: 11: For God does not show favoritism. And I'm so thankful that God doesn't look on us by 'who' we are.. he cares about our spirit, not what kind of degree we have or job we have or any sort of social or cultural standing. I love this.. He looks deep into our heart and certainly doesn't judge by external appearance.
This verse is hard for me to read as it is so convicting and produces a sense of urgency to be changed by God:
16: This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.
Thank you all for your thoughts...

Scott Wow 7 years ago! Yes,but it also true that we will be known by our fruit and that will judge us and prove to others if we are indeed what we profess to be.If they don't see the fruit they aren't judging us but the word of God is,it is very disappointing when we don't see the fruits in others that profess to be Christians and the same visa versa if the don't see the fruit in us!

To be picky about definitions: The word "judge" means to apply law to a person's actions. The word "discriminate" means to recognize a difference in another person or group of people, most often to determine how you will respect a person. The fruits of their actions may convince you not to associate with them, possibly, but not persecute them.
