"How strange that none of the existing elder friends seem to be able ..." By this do you mean you asked them all (or some)? and they said they didn't know? No need to be facetious, Geoff. It would be interesting to hear from anyone who could confirm the information, if this is true. It is amazingly strange that the stories that have been kept alive of the beginnings in England seem to have omitted details of Walter Hanney having been a member, if indeed, he was. When accusations of cover up are rife, confirmation is even more important, wouldn't you agree?

I wasn't being facetious, was trying to understand what you wrote. I thought that perhaps you were verifying that you had done some research here and found that actually no-one was able to confirm it, but there's a hint in what you wrote that it wasn't factual, rather you wondering if it were so.
I think it'd be good to know.

Personally I do not believe it as in the past 30 years being a frequent convention goer to West Hanney it has never been mentioned in my presence, while 2x2 are always quick to claim ownership of anyone, past or present, who is the least bit notorious or slightly important as having been a member. It seems out of keeping with the norm for this guy to never have had a mention!
For this reason it would be interesting to know if it is true.

I agree, this would be interesting to know. Does anyone know the facts?

just a suggestion, but I would guess that a man who is of great enough local importance to merit a statue in the city square, might have some record of his life in the local community library or historical society. A quick phone call might launch the appropriate inquiry.
"I'm interested in learning more about the local man of renown, Mr. Hanney. I'd like to learn about his family background, his education, his work, his faith, wife and children (if any), his latter years, and his death. Could you tell me where I might find such information?" And then start digging.
Or check the obituaries and find out who preached his funeral. Was it a worker?
Or ask an older worker.

West Hanney is in Oxfordshire. The convention is referred to as any of the following: Berks, Oxon, Oxford, Hanney, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, West Hanney. These are just casual names. In correct geographical terms - the convention is held in the village of West Hanney, which is located in the county of Oxfordshire. (NOT Oxford..Oxford is the name of a city). It used to be in Berkshire, but the boundaries were changed. West Hanney is named after one of the friends. He was a dairy farmer and his name was Walter Hanney - he had a large family in the area. In those days it was simply known as Hanney. The village split in the late 1950's, to be known as East Hanney and West Hanney. West Hanney is the home of the convention. There is a statue of Walter Hanney next to the old village post office. The West Hanney Parish Register below indicates that the name West Hanney has been in existence since at least 1667. Perhaps Walter Hanney professed before that ......... perhaps he met the Truth in the sixteenth century in Switzerland? I'm not sure how to explain Mr Siddhartha's rather irrational point of view; however I am aware that his friends are buying land in North Wales which appears equally irrational to me. The first one? I guess the clue is in the reference to Switzerland.

Is this not idol worship ? A bit like the Catholics ?
Certainly if the skafflix were seen to be doing the same thing with "Saint Walter" or whoever, this is exactly what the friends would charge them with !

Going by what you know, or by what you do not know, Siddhartha? Stick to what you know. "Professing" friends would never sing hymns beside a statue outside the post office in West Hanney. They keep a low profile and the only shrines they visit are the graves of former workers, such as Willie Gill, who is buried in the churchyard.
Which of the phrases on the inscription make you think Walter Hanney was professing 2x2ism?
In your dreams........................

They don't have to be asked on the boards, ask them after meeting, or at convention.
But maybe the posters here are all not local.
