Gene: As in "The dubiously-serious (people) search for God."

Gene: I guess the wonderment in my little pea-brain is whether it is the SEARCH that is dubiously serious or the SEARCHERS who are dubiously serious. But if it were the searchers, it should properly be a hyphenated "dubiously-serious."

wally: ah thanks emy...

emy: Gene, the clue for the meaning is, 'serious' appears to be an adj. describing 'search'' and since 'dubiously' is an adv. it must be intended to describe 'serious.' Thus, the search is not dubious, but the seriousness of it.

emy: No, Wally. 'Search' can indeed be a noun and most likely is in that title. Think of "the search ended at dark."

wally: my English must be rusty isn't a noun a person, place or thing? how can search be a noun? isn't "God" the noun?
Dec 19, 2015 23:41:20 GMT -5
Gene: And on a slight side-note, something that's been bothering me for weeks, is "The dubiously serious search for God" a noun phrase, with "dubiously serious" serving as a modifier for the noun "search?"
