Jesus' words were pretty simple. The people asking the question did not have enough understanding to necessarily ask the question right. That doesn't change what Jesus said.

I agree. When you're prepared to approach it honestly through maintaining its context in history, the society of the period, and a grasp of how discussions and teachings were abbreviated as necessary when committed to writing, all the research and historical data will be waiting for you.
